The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories by Dr Seuss is another app produced by Oceanhouse Media and adds to their mighty cannon of Dr Seuss related products.
I have to admit to being a very late latecomer when it comes to Dr Seuss. I was never introduced to it as a child and hadn’t read any of the stories until I had children of my own. I know, I know! My only excuse is that it just never featured on the radar in my family and I never came across anyone else who had read them until I met my husband…
After that shameful confession over with I’ll tell you about The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories. It’s a collection of stories that apparently were originally published in magazines during the 1950’s. Recently rediscovered, they’ve been republished both as a book and an app title. There are seven stories involving wonderfully odd illustrations and the well known rhyming style that Dr Seuss is famous for.
The app is similar to many reading apps out there in that there are chances for readers to read the stories themselves, with narration or with auto play. As it’s a compilation, you access the stories by tapping the characters on the front page. I have to admit it took me a while to realise this and thought it was only one story initially!
What I really liked about this app that not all reading apps have is the ability for your point in the story to be saved so that you can pick up where you left off – this is very helpful when reading with young children who are easily distracted or something happens to take your attention away (such as the cat skidding off the table!)
Reader’s can tap on the screen to find out the names of objects, characters or even actions but they don’t interfere with the narration which is a nice touch. On that subject, the narration is lovely and very calming!
For someone who isn’t very familiar with Dr Seuss, I really enjoyed this app. I like the rhyming style and it’s very naturalistic. If you’re already a fan of Dr Seuss then this is a must have for your app library and suitable for children of all ages, and if you’re a relative newcomer like me it’s well worth finding space on your device for it.
The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories is available for iPhone, iPod, and iPAD. With 7 books in one app, it is $8.99 on App Store.
