FREE App: Classical Kids – Beethoven Lives Upstairs

Classical Kids – Beethoven Lives Upstairs

Classical Kids is a music app that tells stories about famous composers in an engaging and fun way.  There are 7 composers’ stories in the app, and one is free with the full story – Beethoven.

Beethoven Lives Upstairs tells Beethoven’s story via the voice of Christoph, a young boy living in Vienna, at the time when Beethoven comes to stay in his family home.  It is told through back and forth letters to his uncle with Christoph complaining about Beethoven and his eccentric behavior.  While his uncle writes back and tells him of Beethoven’s accomplishments and hardships that may explain some of his harder to live with eccentricities.

The story is told with the companion music by Beethoven. Some featured pieces: Moonlight Sonata, Symphonies #5-9, Fur Elise, Pathetique Sonata, Flute Serenade. What is nice, kids can see which music piece is playing at the bottom of the screen.

According to the info on the app store, each story is fictional, however the details of the period are true.  Every story uses a child’s perspective to take us into a composer’s world.  Whether it is a fantasy world based on their music or somewhat based in reality with their music accompanying it,  it is a fantastic approach and works wonders.  Each story is about 45 minutes long and is entirely unique and engrossing.  One story begins with a dragon, another a rocket, and one with a simple carriage.  Also, each extra story is an in-app purchase but with each entire story being so long, the preview is at least 5-10 minutes so it really helps you decide whether or not you want to buy the other stories.

If kids want to just read the story like a book, they can turn off visual and sound, and only text will be present on the screen, so they can read on their own. There is also Teachers Note section, where you can find some teaching ideas to go over with kids.

NerdyBaker Comments:

While I loved the story, the music with the story, and even some of the wacky looking illustrations, I wasn’t sure how my kids would react.  So when these stories took my son’s attention from another app and had him snuggling up to me, just listening, I knew this was a winner.

Classical Kids is available for iPAD. There are different versions of Classical Kids.  The free full story of Beethoven is only available for free in the teacher’s version, which we have the link attached below. Other 6 composers’ stories are available for purchase via In-App Purchase for $9.99 each.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.
