App Went Free: My Beastly ABCs

My Beastly ABCs

In the spirit of Halloween we have an interactive book app to share. My Beastly ABCs is an alphabet book about a boy and his journey through the alphabet and the various ‘beasts’ he encounters. Books are a great way for children to learn words, experience letter recognition, and expand their vocabulary. When mixing a book with the tablet world, it transforms it into something even greater: an interactive educational tool.

This book is narrated by Jim Dale. If you are not familiar with him, you may recognize his voice as I did. He is a famous actor, voice artist, singer, and songwriter. After looking up who he was, I realized I had recognized his voice from my audio book copies of Harry Potter. Which is ironic because many of the characters in this book are also in the Harry Potter series such as the Griffen, Mandrakes, and the Phoenix. My Beastly ABCs Book App

At the start of the book there are three play mode options you are able to select from: play with narration, play without narration, and auto play. The first two allow for page interaction, where as the auto-play simply goes straight through the book and when the screen in touched it pauses the story. I highly recommend the first two as half the fun is getting to interact with the characters in the story.

During the story the home button in the top right hand corner gives you a drop down menu. The ‘A-Z’ lets you jump straight to a page of the story, the ‘i’ button gives you a paragraph of information on each of the beasts talked about in the story, pretty interesting and a great education piece for older children. The ‘finger’ button lets you return to the play mode option screen to select how you want the story read.

As the story is read to you or as you are reading the story, some of the interactive parts will be highlighted to let you know where you can touch to begin the interaction. There are some parts that you just have to find through exploration such as bobbling the Sphinx’s head, opening the shower curtain to reveal the Abominable Snowman, or guiding the Will-o’-wisps with your finger to name a few. This is a fun story and a great way to get your children in the spirit of Halloween this week.
