A Simple Phonics App for Toddlers – Learn ABC Phonics

Learn ABC Phonics App

Learn ABC phonics is a simple phonics app for toddlers, teaching kids letters.  The simple design makes it suitable even for babies who just start to recognize ABCs.

The interface of the app is very simple.  After opening the app and tapping on the opening screen, your toddler will see all 26 letters in lower case.  You can go through the letters in alphabetical order, or just pick the letter you want your kid to learn.  Simple phonics app for toddlers

Tapping on the letter of choice brings up the letter to full screen.  Kids will hear a voice telling them the name of the letter and the most common sound of the letter.  In the meantime, bright orange dots appear along the lines of the letter, kids are expected to follow the dots to connect them, one stroke at a time, with fun sound effects.  Once the child finishes the letter, the app goes back to the screen of all 26 letters, and those letters kids have gone through are highlighted in orange.  Now you can choose to work on the same letter again or choose a different letter to work on.

There is a section for parents, where you can access by following special instruction – a nice child proof feature.  In the parents section, there are some guides to parents on how to best use the app in toddlers’ learning.

iGameMom comments:

Learn ABC phonics is a very simple app with no bells and whistles attached. If you are looking for a simple and safe app that a baby can get on with minimal assistance, an app with little distractions, this is a good choice. If you are looking for app with a lot interactive features, this is not for you.

Currently the app only has lower case letters. It will be nice if the users can choose between lower case and upper case letters.

Learn ABC phonics works on iPhone, iPod and iPAD. It is $0.99 on App Store.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.

    @Gerianne
    We, parents of babies and toddlers, KNOW that little ones shouldn’t be in front of a screen all the time, that they should be read to and talked with, that they should play and explore, touch and interact with things, people, animals, etc. We also know that a small amount of exposure to computers, television, phones, is not evil and can even be beneficial if used judiciously, especially if the parent/caregiver is right there with the child so interaction is also still taking place. Really though, these holier than thou attitudes about how to raise a child are getting old. Many, many different ways and ideas have worked and been successful and it’s pretty much NONE of your business what other people do outside of your own family. Your opinion is valid but it’s not the only opinion out there that is.

    • Wendy thanks so much for sharing your point of view. You validated my observation that many families started academic learning at a much younger age nowadays. I also agree parents interacting with kids while using these apps should be the way to go. Thanks!

    Babies and toddlers do NOT need to learn letters, and they should NOT be using screens! Talk to them, sing, let them experience textures. READ to them. Build language skills by going places and interacting. Let them climb, crawl, experience. This is NOT developmentally appropriate.

    • Gerianne thanks for sharing your point of view. In the meantime, I hope you are aware that there are people holding different point of view as you. The fact that many preschool kids already know their ABC and 123 tells me many families started academic learning at a very young age. With the society development, I see human being’s knowledge has been condensed over time, kids are learning much more nowadays than we used to at their age. They are also learning with very different tools and media. I think this is necessary so when they are at our age, they can start to learn and explore on subjects we don’t know about.

      Do you know before human being found ways to make the print font smaller, books were so huge that people can only read in a big room, because the book is too big to carry around. When someone first figured out how to print with much smaller font, and people could carry books outside house, many argued this “new technology” was evil because it would prevent kids from spending more time on reading. Now that is history. Smaller books enabled more people’s access to books and better learning experience.

      My principle is before I disapprove anything, I will try it first. If I don’t like it, I will try to think who might like it, and I will share with them and see if they like it. With a society developing so quickly, an open attitude can go a long way …

    This is so interesting! Now even toddlers can have a go at learning without any problems. I think that this is a good start for a kid to get learning and an innovative idea as well. This way kids do not have to view learning as dull and dreary.
