Improve Language Comprehension Using Key Words

Improve Language Comprehension Using Key Words post image

The Key Word Kids language app, by Learning and Language Steps, gives parents an opportunity to offer at home speech and language intervention. The program was developed around the Derbyshire Language Scheme (Masidlover, 1983), an intervention style used by many speech language pathologists. Keywords are the words in a sentence that carry information. Using the Key Word Kids app kids under 7 years old can improve language comprehension using key words by following instructions. Kids will enjoy the play based aspect of the intervention style. In the comprehensive section players will interact with Key Word Kids, Steffy and James in variety of settings such as the beach, a farm and at home. Players are given instructions on how to move the characters around in their environment. When colorful bubbles appear the kids will know they followed the directions correctly.

In the Expressive section players build their own scene and then record themselves describing the action that is occurring. Our four year old enjoyed cleaning the animals on the farm and making the animals run to one of the Key Word Kids.
One of five fun mini games pop up every few minutes in order to give kids a short break. Our favorite was dodging the water balloons on the beach.

In my opinion, Key Word Kids is a valuable resource for all young language learners, although it is designed for children challenged with communication difficulties in speech and language such as language delays, auditory processing issues and autism. It is a good tool for kids to improve language comprehension skills using key words.

App settings are easily adjusted for children from preschool to Grade 2. The app does require a bigger investment than many of the apps available, but I found it is well researched and easy to use. It is also significantly less than the cost of private therapy sessions.

Key Word Kids is available for iPad. It is $27.99 on App Store.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.
