App that Trains Cognitive Skills with Fun Games for Kids

Thinking Time App

Today we introduce a kid’s app that trains children’s cognitive skills, such as memory, reasoning, flexibility. These skills are fundamental building blocks of early learning. Based on research, these skills don’t automatically happen as children mature. A good training program can help children develop these skills.

Thinking Time is designed with leading researchers in developmental neuroscience from Harvard and UC Berkeley. train cognitive skills with fun games

There are 4 training games in the app:

Memory: repeat after me

Kids will see honey drops fall on tree stumps, one at a time. They have to remember which tree stump the honey drop fell on first, which second. Kids tap on the tree stumps in the order they remembered, the little bear will follow kids’ guide jumping from one tree stump to the other. The game starts at 2 drops at a time, progresses to more if kids are performing well.

In this game, kids not only need remember the time sequence, but also the location of the tree stumps. It is a good exercise to strengthen and increase their working memory.

Response inhibition: sort color and shapes

Kids are told to sort the objects by color or shape, sometimes by color, sometimes by shape. They have to pay attention to the task requirement. As the game continues, it will reach a stage that the rules are not clearly told, kids have to figure out the rules themselves by trial-and-error.

Reasoning Analogy: finish the pattern

Kids are shown 3 pictures at a time. Their job is to observe the pattern between the first two pictures, and pick the right picture to fill in the 4th spot so the 3rd and 4th follow the same pattern as the first two pictures. For example, the first two pictures are two identical ice cream cones, then they should pick the same ice cream cone as the 3rd picture.
The patterns become more and more complex and difficult along the game.

Flexibility: Rule switching

Kids are asked to feed the animal, like a bunny or a dog. They will see what the animal wants to eat from the hint picture. Sometimes it is shape, sometime it is color. If the food item fit what bunny wants, kids give it to the bunny; if not, kids put the food in a jar.

After kids finish a round of 4 games, they get to pick a treat – a fish for their fish tank. They can play with the fish if they want to.

There is a For Parents section, where parents can see kids progress – how many games they played and the performance score for each cognitive area.
