Thinking about field trips for kids? Google Art Project is a free website with digitized artworks from over 150 museums around the world. Users can search the art by artist names, years the art created, country, art type, … Many have 3D views. It is an amazing virtual art museum that you can visit online at anytime for free at the comfort of home.
The first time I got on the site, I was excited and overwhelmed at the same time. Excited, that there are so many world renowned master pieces at one place for your to enjoy and study. For the same reason, it also can be overwhelming at first. Here are some features on the site I found very helpful.

When you are on the site for the first time, or just want to explore, you can use the menu at the top of the site. You can view the artworks by Collections, Artworks, Artists. To narrow down the shown artworks, the best place to go is “Artworks”, where you will see many options on the left side of the screen.

You can select artworks by Place, like USA, France, Japan; or by Person, if you just want to see the artworks by one or two artists. If you want to see art of certain type, like clay art, you can view the artworks by Medium, and select Clay. To explore artworks in certain time period, you choose the filter Date. Media Type allows users to select artworks that has video view, or museum view, which has pictures and maps of the museum holding the artwork.

When you find the artworks you like to keep for future viewing, you can create a personal gallery. It is a useful feature for art study or research.

Another very handy feature for study particular art pieces is the Compare feature. You can start comparing by clicking the Compare button at the bottom of the screen, and then drag the art pieces into the boxes. You can compare more than 2 art pieces.

For art teaching ideas, you can visit the education page, where you will find many lesson ideas based on the artworks collected on the site.

Google Art Project is an amazing online art museum. Make sure pay a visit to this wonderful site with kids sometime. You won’t regret. To visit the site on your phone or mobile devices, you can download the app for free.
