Have you watched the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? There is a storybook app from a movie, and now with the 2nd movie coming out, the storybook for the first movie is free for limited time.
Storybooks based on movies many times are effective in getting kids to read. Plus it is good for them to get different perspectives of the story and storytelling via different media.
If you are not familiar with the story, it is about a guy, Flint, uses his invention to turn water into food and help his tiny town into a “food tourism” spot. As the size of the food gets bigger and bigger, the town is facing a tomato-tornado of spaghetti and meatballs. Can Flint and his friends save the town? You have to read the story.
The book is designed for kids age 3 to 8. Kids can choose from one of three options: auto play, read for me, and read by myself. When the book is read, the corresponding words are highlighted. If your kids like the story, this will be good book to get them into reading.
Movie based storybooks are usually good choices to get reluctant readers into reading. You either ask the child read the book before the movie as an incentive, or use the book as a review tool to go over some favorite scenes.
My son is advanced in reading. I started comparison exercise with him recently. We compare the book with the movie after we read a storybook based on movie. We compare which scene from the movie is included in the book, which scene is not, and talk about how the story still runs smoothly without including every scene from the movie. This would be a great way for kids to learn about storytelling and hopefully incorporate into their own writing some time.
The app also includes the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 activity book via In-App Purchase for $0.99. It is behind a parental lock, so it is safe for the kids.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is available for iPhone, iPod and iPAD. It is free for limited time.
