Math Ahoy is a math strategy game app for kids in kindergarten to early elementary school. Kids must use their math skill and strategy to win the game. In addition to math, kids will also learn world geography. It is available on both iOS devices and Android devices, and it is free for limited time.
The app is essentially a board game. Kids will be the captain of the pirate ship to collect treasures from cities all around the world. They have to figure out where they want to go, how many steps they need to get there. The number of steps the ship will move is the sum or the difference between wind speed and the number on captain’s wheel. Kids can change the number on Captain’s wheel to get the number they need.
In addition to reaching cities with treasures, kids also want to avoid king’s fleet who is trying to catch them, the pirates.
To win the game, kids need think ahead first the direction they want to go, so they are not going to run into king’s fleet, and they are going to places with treasures.
Next, they need figure out the number of steps they need, and watch for wind speed, and decide what is the number on captain’s wheel will take them to where they need be. Wind speed is a random number, and captain’s wheel has numbers 1 to 6. So this is not a straight forward math problem. It is almost a reversed math problem.
Although learning world geography is not the main purpose of this app, but kids are travelling throughout the world on the real world map. They can move their ship from Asian to Australia, and then to African. It is a nice introduction of world map to kids.
The user interface is easy and beautiful. The background music and sound effect is quiet and encourages thinking. If kids don’t like the sounds, they can turn it off.
