Van Gogh and the Sunflowers is Free for today only. It is an iPAD app, usually $3.99 on App store. It is based on true events happened to Van Gogh.
It tells Van Gogh’s story through a boy named Camille. Camille and his family became friends of a strange visitor to his small town, although other kids and villagers did not like the visitor. One day Camille brought this man a gift of bright, beautiful sunflowers. The man was the artist Vincent van Gogh, and the sunflowers quickly became the subject of a magnificent painting.
The story is quite simple. It teaches kids to tolerate and embrace difference, as things or people that are different can bring up a whole new world. The gentle narration and text is accompanied by the beautiful watercolor illustrations. Some pages include reproduction of some of van Gogh’s most famous paintings.
On each page, the objects and figures stands out like those pop up books. When you tap on those objects or people, it will bring up a play page. Younger kids will be interested in coloring the page, while school age kids will have a good time playing the mechanic simple machine puzzle.
There is a virtual museum with detailed descriptions of the ten paintings in the story. Kids will learn some interesting facts about those famous paintings.
iGameMom Comment:
This is a good book app teaching kids art, history, and accepting differences. The games on each page are fun. The only thing I don’t like is the game page comes out easily when you turn the pages, it can be a distractions to continuous reading. It is suggested, by the developer, for kids age 4-11. For younger kids, I suggest you read with your child and you be the one who control the page turning to keep the child focus on the story.
If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.
Interested in the book, but don’t have an iPAD? You can have the print book for $8.09 from Amazon: van Gogh and the Sunflowers
