Brush of Truth – A Book that Lets You Choose the Ending

Brush of Truth – A Book that Lets You Choose the Ending post image

Brush of Truth is a book app written for children age 8-12.  What I liked the most is the feature that the readers decide how the story unfolds.  There are 65 interactive “decision points” throughout the book, and 20 different endings.

As you read the story there are different choices you can make, each choice leads to a different ending.  A green circle next to the choice means you haven’t chose it yet or there are more choices down the road. A checkmark next to the choice means you’ve gone through that path. You can bookmark your spot to come back to it later.

The story is interesting, and is told by “you”, the reader: You and your sister find a crudely-crafted paintbrush on a beach and discover it has magical powers. You soon learn it is the long-lost Brush of Truth, created by a medieval sorcerer to hand off his enchantments to his children.  You will help a sea goddess find the key to the ocean’s dying sea life, explore tunnels under the earth and flee talking vultures…

Since the readers participate in the story creation, this app could be an effective tool in engaging the reluctant readers.  Kids will be anxious to find out the ending of their “own” story.

iGameMom Comments:

There are print books with similar features.  I always find it awkward when I have to skip some pages and jump to certain part of the book when I made a choice about the story.  Book app makes books like this a lot more fun and easier to manage.  After you make a choice, you go to the right spot by a simple tap, no visible pages to skip.  I wish there are more book apps like this, since they engage young readers much better.

There are pictures in the book, but it is a chapter book.  It is a book for kids age 8-12, or those have good comprehension skills.  Brush of Truth is $1.99 at App store.  It is available on iPhone and iPAD.  It is also available for Android and Windows Phone.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.

  • Thanks a lot for sharing this with all folks you really realize what you’re speaking approximately! Bookmarked. Kindly also consult with my web site =). We will have a link alternate agreement between us

  • My children always loved books that allowed them to choose the ending…in the pre-apps days :). I’ve enjoyed visiting your site…thanks for stopping by & liking my post!

It is a fun way to get kids to read.

  • This app is a must for the classroom. Julie’s writing style lends itself to teaching how to write compound and complex sentences correctly. This app is a “must have” for not only its story line with multiple endings but its potential for teaching writing.

Thanks for sharing, I’d love to check out the app version! Choose Your Own Adventure books were favorites of mine as a kid, but I also found it awkward skipping around – it bugged me that there were entire sections I wasn’t even reading.

I am glad I am not alone. If you like “choose your own adventure books”, you should try it out. I found app version is a lot easier to handle. No more flipping-through-pages-without-reading anymore. 🙂

  • Sounds like a very fun adaptation of the Choose Your Own Adventure stories I read when I was growing up. Thanks for sharing!

  • Very cool, I remember these from years ago…

  • I had a reading book like this as a child a snow white book and you would make a decision at certain points which then told you to turn to a particular page for different endings loved it! this sounds great!

I think Apps provide a perfect platform for books with this type of feature. Hope we can see more books like this.

  • Definitely want to get this for my 8 year old. But I can only purchase from the Denmark iTunes store site. Can you add a link for DK?

    • iGameMom

Added the Denmark link next to the links of other countries. Enjoy! Please let me know how she like it.

It is a good book. My son likes it a lot. He is tracking the number of endings he’s got…

  • I used to love “Choose your own adventure” books when I was a kid. This is a great idea for an app!

    • iGameMom

I agree. It is an easy feature to be built into the app. Hope more developers start thinking …
