12 Classic Children’s Books To Listen on Your Phone post image

We use audio books in the car a lot. I found it a great experience to listen to the same books together with kids. Being able to see how they react and to hear their thoughts triggered by the book, I can find the right topics to talk about. It is a nice way to use the commute hours to connect with kids. When choosing books, I always try the classic children’s books, especially after I discover the 99c WhisperSync Classic. Given many of these books are free on Kindle and Audible, so the total cost is less than a dollar.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, follows the lives of four sisters on a journey out of adolescence in the post-civil war America.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, depicts the personal growth and personal development of an orphan nicknamed Pip. The novel is set in Kent and London in the early to mid-19th century and contains some of Dickens’s most memorable scenes and colorful characters.

Heidi is a classic story by Johanna Spyri about a young orphan who is sent to live with her grumpy grandfather in the Swiss Alps.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It depicts the reality of slavery through stories of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave, and things happened around him. It is recommended for high school students.

Treasure Island is one of the great adventure tales of all time. A voyage for buried treasure spells trouble for cabin boy Jim Hawkins, who finds himself in the middle of a mutiny with some of the nastiest pirates to ever sail the seven seas.

The Three Musketeers is a historical novel by Alexandre Dumas. Set in 1625–1628, it tells the story of a young man named d’Artagnan to join the Musketeers of the Guard in Paris. Although d’Artagnan is not able to join this elite corps immediately, he befriends the three most formidable musketeers of the age and gets involved in affairs of the state and court. There is a movie based on it too if you are interested.

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a classic about the horse Black Beauty living at the turn-of-the-century London. It won’t be hard for kids, through Black Beauty’s fortunes, good and bad, to learn that animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness.

Note: there are usually several different versions of the same book. The one I linked above has audio option, but this one doesn’t, although the eBook itself is free.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a must read for every child. Dorothy and her little dog Toto are dropped on the Land of Oz by a wild tornado. Can Dorothy and her new friends survive the perils of Oz to reach the Wizard and find a way home? There is also a movie of the same title.

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century and an apocryphal tale concerning the use of a former ballet pupil’s skeleton in Carl Maria von Weber’s 1841 production of Der Freischütz. It has been successfully adapted into various stage and film adaptations, most notables are the 1925 film and Andrew Lloyd Weber’s 1986 musical.

The Railway Children is about a family that moves from London to a house near the railway in Yorkshire, after the father disappeared one day after dinner. The children befriend an Old Gentleman who regularly takes the train near their house and who is able to help the family reunite again.

Grimm’s Fairy Stories includes over 20 fairy tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Most are well-known stories, like Rumpelstiltskin, Cinderella, and Hansel and Grethel.
