Expand Kids Vocabulary by Making Compound Words

Make a Compound Word

We recently have been playing with Just2Fun a lot. It challenges your mind to create compound words or phrases based on pictures. This reminded me another compound word app designed for younger kids: Make Compound Words. It is designed for kids 5-9, who have learned some sight words or at least know most common words. Compound words are fun to learn and a great way to help kids gain more vocabulary. Make a compound word - expand kids vocabulary with fun

The game play is fairly easy. Kids choose a picture. The app asks kids to pick a word for the picture among 4 choices, like “Select the word to match the picture, Rain”. After kids pick the right word, another picture will show up. Kids will hear the word being read aloud and they will select the word for the 2nd picture.

If kids pick the wrong word, they will hear something like “oops” and have to pick another word. Once the 2nd word is picked, the picture for the compound word shows up, and kids will hear “Rain and Bow put together, you get Rainbow”. Then kids will move to the next word.

There are about 100 compound words in the app. All words are with intuitive pictures. The words are grouped into 4 words groups. Kids can pick the words they want to learn or practice from the pictures they see. They can also just hit the play button and let the app choose the word for them.

All pictures are simple and easy to recognize. The narration is very kids friendly and pleasant. It is fun app for kids who have learnt sight word to further expand their vocabulary.

Make Compound Words is available on iPad. It is $0.99 on App Store.
