FREE App: Access Hundreds of Children’s Books for FREE via Bookboard

Bookboard

I have introduced several book reader apps in the past, Sylvan Dell, Reading Comprehension Camp, to name a few.  Each reader app has its own unique features and reading range to attract different users.   Today I have another one I want to share, and of course, it has its own unique features that are going to be very attractive to many families.  It is so far one of the book reader covering biggest age range – from 2 to 12, it offers complete free access to hundreds of books with free membership.

It is called Bookboard. I like the mechanism it sets up that kids can only see a limited selection of books (around 10) at a time, although there are more than 400 books in the app.  This makes it easier for kids to choose books on their own. The selection is based on kids age and gender to begin with, then based on the books they read.

Another good feature that will encourage kids to read more is the unlocking system.  Kids will see a red bar at the bottom of the screen.  The more they read, the longer the bar goes.  Once the bar reaches the end, they unlock another book.Bookboard offers books for kids

So far the book selection my son has is age appropriate.  I am glad they also have chapter books, as many other reader apps mostly cover books for younger kids.  On the screen shots you can see the wide variety of books they have: picture books for young kids, non-fiction books, chapter books, …

To access the books, you do have to sign up. Membership is free.  After initial sign up, you will receive an email for confirmation, then put in some more information, such as kids age and gender.  I think this helped the app find the right book for my son, since he received recommendation he liked all the time and all at his level.  You can also put in more than one child and each will receive different book recommendations.  They also offer paid membership if you want to have access to the audio part of the books. With the free membership, you can still read the books, just without audio function. For us for now, the free membership works just fine.  With the school started, I think it will help on finishing the reading assignments.

The sign up process is all through the website. Once you sign up, you can read the books on iPAD – simply follow the instructions at the end of the sign up process and put an icon on your iPAD screen (with just one simple tap), and everything functions just like an app.

It is a great reading resource for kids.  I highly recommend.  To sign up, visit the sign up page

Is this compatible with Kindle Fire?

    • I never tried Kindle. It would be a good question for the developers.

Part of this webiste is not readable: it is blocked by an add.

    • Thanks for letting me know. I have to figure it out how to stop that.

  • I just reviewed Bookboard this week. I agree that it’s a great resource! Thanks for sharing at After School.

    • I am pretty happy with the app, especially now they added some better known books.
