Free App: Books with Learning Activities

Sylvan Dell

On iGameMom, we have reviewed a couple book reader apps.  You can think a book reader app as a book library or book store, where you can find many books, and pick which one you want to read or purchase.  Recently, Bethany from No Twiddle Twaddle told me about an app from Sylvan Dell.  As soon as I looked at the app, I felt in love with it right away.

In Sylvan Dell, all the books are science and math focused.  They are fiction or non-fiction books.  All the books are written for school age kids from grade K to 6.  What I like the most is the additional teaching/learning materials attached to each book.  At the end of each book, you can find 4-6 pages of activity print outs and guides.  For example, for the book Baby Owl’s Rescue, you will get a nice printout of facts about owls, matching game and sequence games based on facts kids learned about owls.  There are also lists of pre-read and post-read questions and activities.  All these additional materials make it a perfect book app for summer reading.  It will Sylvan Dell Book Appbe a great help for parents who want their kids read throughout the summer, but don’t have time to design the reading activities to keep the kids engaged or to test out how much they understand the materials.

Another feature I liked is all books can be read in both English and Spanish.  My son had fun listening the book in Spanish.  It is a nice way to keep kids refreshed on Spanish through the summer.  Even if they don’t understand the Spanish 100%, it is still good to have them listen to it.

All the books in the app are just simple books with no on-screen interaction on the pictures.  Kids can choose to have narration on or off while reading.

The Sylvan Dell App is available for iPAD, and is FREE on App Store.  You can purchase books via In-App Purchase.   However, Sylvan Dell books are not only available in App format, they are also available as iBooks that you can get from iBookstore. If you don’t have a mobile device, you can read the books online on their website, or purchase print books. At the bottom of this post, you can see a giveaway of two of their iBooks. If you want to try a couple books for free before purchase, this is a good opportunity.  Most of their books are also available on Amazon.  To see what is available on Amazon, you can visit No Twiddle Twaddle

I usually check out what my friends and their kids are reading when I am looking for summer reading ideas.

Where do you find summer reading ideas? Our local library has a flyer with a list that has a changing theme, for example, recently it has been exploring world cultures. I also am a member of goodreads and some of the members suggest different books. We also have a sort of independent bookstore in town and we visit about once every two weeks and pick out something new.

    • I have not used goodread. Should try to find out more about it.

This week we are learning about farms and went to the library and found some farm animal books. We made cotton ball sheep today. We also have planned handprint hens, foam sticker farms, and to eat Annie’s farm Mac and cheese sometime this week.

We go to the library and sometimes we look up ebooks for summer reading.

    • Library has become a great resource for us too. I also like eBooks, it is easier for summer travel.
