The Eat & Move-O-Matic is a free educational app showing kids the relationship between taking calories in and burning them off through activity. The goal is to help kids make new discoveries about their favorite foods and support healthy decision making related to food choice and consumption. The app was developed as part of the 4-H Youth Voice: Youth Choice initiative, which is a national program that encourages young people to develop and maintain healthy, active lifestyles.
It is very easy to use and fun to play. When kids start the app, they will see food choices on the left and activity choices on the right. They pick different choices by sliding the food or activities up or down. Once a food is picked, number of calories will be shown, and an activity that will consume the same amount of calories will also be shown on the right.
On the picture of the app screen shot you can see, I picked a grilled chicken sandwich, which has 419 calories. If I will just being doing homework, it will take me 4 hours and 39 minutes to burn off that many calories. But if I choose a different activity, say playing volleyball, it will take me 2 hours to burn 419 calories; or jumping rope will only need 47 minutes to use up 419 calories.
Under the food or activity choice, there is a light bulb. If kids click on it, they will see tips related to their choices. For grilled chicken sandwich, I saw “Skip the mayo to save 90 calories”.
Eat & Move-O-Matic is a simple app yet provides a lot flexibility on how to use it. I like that kids can choose different activities and learn how many hours each activity takes to burn off the same amount of calories. The tips are also very helpful, especially when each tip is specific to the choice a child just make. They help the kids learn how small changes can make big differences
