FREE App: Khan Academy App

Khan Academy

Khan Academy has become a phenomena in the past couple years. It offers free online classes on subjects like math, physics, or history. The topics include: K-12 math, science (such as biology, chemistry, and physics), finance, history, test prep (GMAT, CAHSEE, SAT math, etc). The level of the courses ranges from elementary school to college. Couple days ago, Khan Academy launched their App. Like their online courses, the app is free. It enables you to view Khan Academy’s complete library of over 2700 videos.

Features included in the iPad app: Khan Academy Free App

  • Downloadable videos: take individual teaching videos or entire playlists to watch offline at your own pace
  • Subtitles: follow along, skip ahead, or go back by navigating through subtitles
  • Track your progress: Log in with your Khan Academy user account to get credit for watching videos, and see your achievements
  • Exercises: not available yet, but they say it is coming soon.

Who is this App for:

School students at any level (Kindergarten to college), who need additional tutoring on math or science related subjects. It could be someone who did not quite understand certain concepts during the regular class, thus in need of extra work; or someone who wants to get a step ahead. For example, under Math, they have Arithmetic. Under Arithmetic, you can choose what you want to work on: addition and subtraction, or Multiplication, or Negative number, etc. Say you picked addition, then you will see a list of videos: basic addition, Adding 2-digit numbers, … Each video is about 10 to 15 minutes long and very easy to follow.

It is available for iPhone, iPod, and iPAD.  It is free.

If you would like to check it out or download the app, please use the links provided. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom receives a small percentage. I hope, with your support, I can test more apps and share back with everyone.

I got turned on to Khan Academy online about a month ago. My son has been struggling w/both math & reading for ever. The Khan site is not designed for kids, it is designed for adults, it’s designed for learning. There are no flashing lights, no hot buttons, no pretty distractions. There are simple math problems and a place to put your answer. PERFECT for a kid who gets easily distracted.

So here’s the gem ,in 3 weeks of working daily w/the Khan site for simple math my son has come up almost 1/2 a grade level in addition & subtraction math skills. More importantly, he is excited about doing math problems and his confidence is soaring!

So thanks for the nod to the iPad app here, and note that I highly recommend it for kids of all ages (yes even us older ones who want to relearn what we’ve forgotten from high school algebra).

    • You bring up a good point – no distraction while learning. The length of each unit is reasonable. These make it easy for the learner to focus on the subject. moving along the units also give the learner a sense of achievement, thus more confidence.

    Super!
    Already downloaded!
Now I can’t wait to see what they have for my grandson, five.

    • Some simple math courses, such as single digit additions could be a good start.

One of my goals in retirement is to learn what to do with that “X” in whatever equation in algebra–here’s my chance. So not just for typical students, but maybe for all of us who continue to be “young-at-heart” (or brain cells) thank you so much for this info–Barb

    • Thank you! Please let us know how you like it. I really wish they have the exercises part. Hopefully soon.

my 7th grader’s school teaches math singapore style and they get extra credit for khan academy. great tip. She has excelled with this method–in 8 th grade honors algebra!

    • I have heard so many good things about Singapore math. I have to check it out. Did you see Khan Academy has a small portion of Singapore math under “Test Prep”? I wish they have more.
