Kidaptive, the creator of the award-winning Leo’s Pad app, has released a new educational app called Leo’s Letters. This free game app allows kids to search for letters formed by stars in the night sky and then form three, four, or five letter words.
When kids start the app, they will see a night sky full of starts. They have to find the letters in the sky. They can search for letters by moving and spinning the sky. When they find a letter, they can tap on the letter to claim it. Once tapped, the letters are stored at the bottom of the screen and kids can use these letters to form a word. To spell a word, kids can just drag the letters into the word boxes. The more words they can form within the set time period, the higher the score they get. The timer is at the top of the screen, starting from the moon on the left, moving slowing towards the sun on the right. Once the timer reaches the sun, the session is over.
There are three levels in the game. At Easy level, kids are to form 3-letter words; Medium level is for 4-letter words; and at Hard level, kids have to make 5-letter words.
How parents can help:
The game is designed for grown-ups and children to play together. Parents are encouraged to let children find letters and then help them form words on the screen. Once they find the word, make sure to read aloud and explain the words to kids.
What kids can learn:
Through the game, children learn letters and spelling, which lead to early reading skills. They also learn mental shape recognition. The letters in the sky could be in any angle, so kids have to know the letter shape very well to identify them. While moving the letters into the word boxes, kids also practice hand-eye coordination, for younger kids this could be a good fine motor skill exercise.
Overall Leo’s Letters is a fun learning game, and it is FREE. It works on iPhone, iPod and iPAD.
