Free App: Phonics with Phonzy – Practice Letter Sounds and Words Aloud

Free App: Phonics with Phonzy – Practice Letter Sounds and Words Aloud post image

Phonics with Phonzy is a phonics app for kids. It is unique in ways of encouraging kids to practice the letters and words out loud, which is essential in any language learning experience. It also demonstrates mouth movements to show kids how to pronounce the sound. It is a free app right now. However, I don’t know how long it will stay free. If you need phonics help for your kids, this might be a good one to try and good time to get it when it is free.

The app requires users sign up a free account before using the program. It is fairly easy to do and takes less than a minute to do. All you need do is to put in your email address, and wait for the confirmation email to confirm that the email is real.

Once you have the account set up, you can put in more than one child to track progress. The practice is grouped into 7 sessions. Each session has 6 letters or combinations.

In each session, Phonzy will read the phonics loud, and he will wait for the kids to read it. If Phonzy can’t hear any sound, he will shake his head and patiently wait, till kids read the letter or word. Currently the app doesn’t have the capability to tell if kids’ pronunciation is correct or not, so it is more of encouraging kids to practice than correcting mistakes. If kids need help on correctly saying the sound, a parent or a teacher has to be with them. Each letter has an example word right after the letter. For example, Tent is right after T. All words have images to help kids recognize the words.

At the end of each session, there is a fun activity for kids. After the first session, we got to make silly faces following Phonzy’s lead and we could even take a picture together with Phonzy.

Kids can always go back the sessions they have finished, and they will be able to listen to those letter sounds and the word with the sound again.

On the left top corner of the home screen, you can see a round button with your child’s name next to it. From there, you can enter parent’s section, where you can adjust the starting session for your child. By default, the app will pick up the session where the child stopped last time. But if you want the child to repeat an earlier session, or skip a session, you can do it here.

Overall, Phonics with Phonzy is a good phonics learning and practice tool for kids, especially for those who need more practice on specific sounds.
