Free App: Poetry from the Poetry Foundation

Poetry from the Poetry Foundation

Do you like to read poems? Do you read poems with your kids? Poetry for kids has been my recent interest. The love of poetry is a cultured taste that needs be cultivated from a young age. I found the best way to engage a child in poetry is to find the subject that they are interested in, and share when they are in the mood for at the moment.  I find a free app from The Poetry Foundation can help you do just that.

Poetry from the Poetry Foundation offers thousands of poems for free. You can search the poems by spinning and matching the two-leveled spinning wheels.  Each level has about 10 different categories. The top level has: Humor, Joy, Passion, Nostalgia, Optimism, … The bottom level has: Nature, Spirituality, Celebration, Art and Science, … Users can randomly match the two groups of categories and find poems about Humor and Celebration, Passion and Nature, or Optimism and Nature. If you don’t want to pick any category in particular, you can just let the app spin the wheels to pick one for you. Free App to Read Thousands of Poems

I love this way of finding poems with kids. Kids feel they are in control and they can pick the poem they are in the mood for, and will be more interested in reading it.

Once you decide on the types of poems you want to read, you can choose a poem to read with your kids. Some poems have audio too, so you can listen to it.

There are thousands of poems included the app, from William Shakespeare to César Vallejo to Heather McHugh. They are poems from the Poetry magazine, public domain, or the foundation has secured mobile permissions. Each month there will be new poems added to the app.  It is a handy mobile poetry library.

If you find a poem you really like, you can save it as a favorite to come back in the future.

If you prefer, you can read all the poems on their website too. You can also access to the Poetry magazine from the app, which is free. You do need Wifi or data connection to read the magazine.

Poetry from the Poetry Foundation is available on iPhone, iPod and iPad. It is also available for Android on Google Play and Amazon. If you prefer, you can also read all the poems on your computer from their website www.poetryfoundation.org.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.

  • Ooh, just in time for National Poetry Month next week! Looks fabulous!

  • My youngest son loves poems and we don’t really let him have apps on his cell. It’s basically for emergency use only but I would allow this for him. It would get him reading while waiting for us to pick him up from activities.

  • I absolutely love poems…I am homeschooling our son and we actually had a exercise last week about writing poems and haikus. It was a lot more fun than I thought trying to rhythm certain words that basically have no words that rhythms.

    • I did not like poems till I was forced to read them 🙂 SO I believe some early exposure will help kids liking poetry.
