Sound Uncovered

Many times I wanted to do some science activities at home, but it is hard to find fun and engaging activities for kids. Last night I found this FREE app Sound Uncovered. I got a lot interesting ideas of science activities for kids.
Sound Uncovered Free App
Have you ever heard the sound of sand? Yes, it does make sound, by sand itself, and it is because the friction between the sand grains generates vibrations in the audible range. You will be able to hear it in the desert, and the phenomenon is called booming dunes. You can also hear it at the beach when you walk on sand and it squeaks, which is a smaller-scale version of the phenomenon. Interested in doing it at home? You can do this with a sandbox.

Sound Uncovered is a fascinating app takes you explore the many intriguing sound related phenomena, hands on. It is like going through a museum of sound. Do you know what happens when two different notes are played at the same time? The app lets you hear it while you can adjust the two sound sources yourself – fun thing for kids to do. It then explains what you hear using everyday life examples – you have to get the app to find out. Further, the app tells you the same theory behind the phenomenon also explain something about the police whistle and how a piano is tuned. Some other interesting questions the app addressed: Can you talk and listen at the same time? Why does the sound of gum chewing drive some people mad? Can the eyes listen too? All questions are addressed with some hands-on activities kids will enjoy.

iGameMom Comment:

I like the app for many reasons. The biggest reason is the hands-on approach of teaching with everyday life examples. It asks questions, then offers an interesting hands-on experiment, then expands to more everyday life examples. It is a great way to teach kids science. If you are looking for some novel approach teaching kids about sound, you will find tons of new ideas of science activities for kids, many are done within the app, and a lot can be easily done at home, and you are going to have as much fun as your child.

Sound Discovered in available for iPAD only. It is FREE on App Store.

If you don’t have an iPAD, you can try their website http://www.exploratorium.edu/. I did not get a chance to explore much, but looks like it offers just as much interesting ideas as the app.

    • I agree. Something beyond what they learn at school, yet within their level of capability.

Thanks! I love the free educational apps. My daughter-in-law might homeschool our GKs, but even if she doesn’t, I love having educational things to do with them. Thank you!

    • This is definitely a good one! Very creative from developer’s point of view.
