I have not paid much attention to news apps except News-O-Matic. Because I felt many news include contents that are not child safe. Recently I heard from a homeschool mom that they use Yahoo News for kids in their homeschool. I was quite surprised and checked it out. I am really surprised by the quality of the news it provides.
Things I like the most about Yahoo News Digest:
First it is not overwhelming.
It curate news in just a handful categories: world, science, politics, sports… Each day, it picks two of the most significant news in the category to deliver it to you, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The cover news is brief for you to get the idea what it is. If you want to learn more, you can click on the corresponding buttons to learn more: tweets, pictures or videos, related news, and related Wikipedia entries.
The news are delivered twice a day, fitting most people’s habit of learning about news around breakfast and after dinner. You can even set the time when you want the news to be delivered to you.
The other reason I like Yahoo News Digest is the healthy content.
It is not trying to gain readers by throwing out the updates on celebrities. It is curating the most important things you need know about the world. So far I have not seen anything that I am not comfortable to share with my kids.
Lastly, I like the interface of the app.
It is easy to find the news you want to read, and easy to find more information about each news if you want to know more about it.
Overall, Yahoo News Digest is a great news app for school age kids. It provides great content for reading, writing, or social study.
