FREE App: Toca Tailor Fairy Tales

Toca Tailor Fairy Tales App

Toca Boca just released a new app Toca Tailor Fairy Tale, and it is FREE.  Toca Boca is known for developing apps with open-ended free play.  I have reviewed their Toca Doctor, Toca Store, Toca Kitchen, and Toca Hair Salon.  None of them disappointed me.  In this new app Toca Tailor Fairy Tale, they bring the old-fashioned dress up play onto iPhone/iPAD, and with so much more!  For example, kids can take pictures of any objects they like and then use them as design patterns for the clothes.  I highly recommend you check it out.

The App works on iPhone, iPod, and iPAD.  It is designed for kids age 4 and up.

Introduction on App Store:

Time to get busy with those design skills! With Toca Tailor Fairy Tales, you can create, combine and style fun outfits for two characters in a beautiful Fairy Tale setting! Choose between lots of clothing designs, then tailor them by adjusting hems and lengthening sleeves.  Mix and match colours, prints and fabrics – or use the built-in fabric camera to create your very own unique patterns from things around you. You can also use pictures from your device’s Camera Roll! Then add buttons, pockets and other original details. Once your outfit looks good, add the finishing touches: hats, shoes and fun accessories. Like what you see? Take a snapshot of your creation, using your own room as a background!

Toca Tailor Fairy Tales recreates the feeling of a great dress-up party. It’s a good way of playing around with colours and patterns and allows unlimited creativity. Thanks to simple multi-touch gestures, it’s easy to move, rotate and adjust patterns and decorations to create completely unique designs.

App Features:

✔ 2 fun characters to choose from
✔ Mix, match, rotate and adjust 16 different fabric patterns
✔ Create your own unique patterns with the camera feature
✔ Add 8 different clothing details – buttons, belts and more

Embarrassed (kinda!) to admit this…but I’m 24 and found the app to be pretty entertaining.

    • I am much older than you – too old to even mention my age, I found myself spending so much time playing, till it is too late to post the news 🙂 This is how great the app is, no matter how old you are, what intellectual level you are at, you can enjoy the app and find something interesting from the play.

  • Great article. I’ve begun looking at picture books for iPads, smartphones, Kindle, etc. and I wonder if you think kids can enjoy picture books on these devices without all of the interactivity that an app provides? Or are kids really wanting the kind of tactile engagement with a story that an app provides?

    • It depends. For younger kids, any stimulation is good, sound, color, … We try do all kind of different things with babies. But for school age, I will start minimize the interactivities, unless they are helping the kids understand the content. The focus should not be fancy techniques, the focus should be on the end result you want to achieve, do you just want to get kids attention but don’t care if they retain the content? or do you want them remember the content with the help of some fun games? Same technique, if you use it right, it will help the learning; if you don’t use it right, it will be a distraction. This is just my opinion.
