Frozen: Storybook Deluxe from Disney

Frozen Storybook Deluxe from Disney

A few days after seeing Frozen with my kids, I was thrilled to get the opportunity to review the app Frozen: Storybook Deluxe from Disney, and I couldn’t have been happier.  This app is fantastic!  Everything about it screams inventiveness and ideas that enhance the story.

Let’s begin with the storybook.  Along with fundamental options storybook apps have, like the ability for kids to record the story in their voice or read on their own, this app goes to the next level in terms of storytelling.  Kids swipe to read and almost every picture has an accompanying page with a small action or even a few small clips from the movie.  The app also gives kids the option to flip the screen to show each sister’s point of view.  Once it is flipped the screen will “freeze”, and after kids tap it, the story continues.  This is the most interactive feature of a storybook I have ever encountered.

There are three games in this app: free draw, snow globe, and puzzles. Frozen Storybook Deluxe

The “ice tools” kids can use to free draw with are just the coolest things ever.  The snowflake tool will multiply kids keystrokes by six, which makes symmetrical snowflake making a cinch.  The ice swirl tool adds lovely flourishes to any line.  The ice crystal tool makes block like crystal lines, perfect for ice castle making.  The multiple snowflake tool adds lovely tiny snowflakes along any finger swipe.  The brush is a simple line and the eraser will “chisel” over large areas or erase with a snowflake when used one tap at a time.

The free draw and snow globe games also utilize templates to help kids in their drawing endeavors.  While the castle template is only used for the ice crystal option in the snow globe and the snowflake template is only available for the snowflake portion of the snow globe game, both templates are available during free draw at any time.  Kids can also use the ice swirl tool in snow globe mode and there are four different scenes kids can use inside their snow globe.

Kids use the puzzle game to uncover different pictures from the story.  Pick your picture, tap the ice, watch and listen to it crack, and match the puzzle pieces with the ones on the side.  Like in real life, the edge pieces are the easiest and aid in finishing the puzzle.

NerdyBaker comments:

As a big fan of the sibling nature of the story, the switching of story perspectives was just a stroke of genius.  As someone who pretty much can’t draw, I absolutely adore all the ice tools especially the snowflake one and all the sounds that accompany them.  The puzzles might be a bit difficult for littler ones but once you get them started, they should be able to finish them.

Frozen: Storybook Deluxe is available for iPhone, iPod and iPAD, it is $6.99 on the App Store.
