Historical Non-Fiction Books for Kids – Blue Planet Tales

Blue Planet Tales

Blue Planet Tales is a book app for kids. It is a collection of non-fiction books for kids based on history with a humanity focus. All stories are based on historical true facts. Instead of learning history with those very dry facts, Blue Planet Tales make these history facts and meanings into interesting stories that kids love to read and to care about. Kids non-fiction books based on real history

One of the stories is about Laika, the first dog, and the first living being, who traveled in space. Laika sacrificed his life and helped human being realize that it is possible for man to travel in the outer space. What can we learn from this experiment, in addition to science? It is a beautiful and emotional story that will touch many, especially kids who love animals.

In each story, after several pages, there will be a question page to test on kids’ comprehension. If kids answer the questions right, they will get thumbs up from the little blue planet. At the end of the story, there will be more questions. The total correct answers are added to the total comprehension score.

There are currently 18 stories available in the app, with more to come.  Some of the titles are: Dinosaur Extinction, Laika the Little Astronaut Dog, A Race to the South Pole, The Discovery of America, Bird Migration, Blackbeard the Pirate. Kids can choose the books by category: Adventures, Science, History, Nature, and Famous People.

I like the fact that each story is available in both English and Spanish.

iGameMom Comments:

I like the minimum interaction on the pages. There are some light animations on each page, but not enough to distract reading.

I also like the comprehension questions. Those appearing during the stories, in fact, not only test for comprehension, but also act as hints that lead kids’ thinking while reading the stories. If you are looking for some good non-fiction read for kids, Blue Planet Tales definitely worth a try.

Another added bonus is the bilingual feature. Kids can read it in English or Spanish. Perfect for bi-lingual kids or if you want to help kids learn both languages.

Blue Planet Tales is available for iPAD. It is free to download, with one book free, and the first several pages of each story are also available for free. Full access of each book is available via In-App Purchase or through monthly subscription.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.

Thanks for posting on kids not-fiction books. I have been looking for good non-fiction for my 5 year old son. It seems like most of the books for this age are fiction. I look forward to reading this app with my son. Thanks again.

    • Thanks for the note. There are more interest in fiction than nonfiction, I was a little worried that not many people would be interested in this, so glad to hear you are looking for nonfiction.

We read two of the stories tonight and we were disappointed. They need some serious editing. The comprehension questions proceed the pages they are asking about. Some of the comprehension questions are about content that is not covered in the story. With more attention to editing this could become a good reading app – but not yet.

Hi Anthony, thanks for your comments. The two things you are disappointed about have been done in that way on purpose:

When we ask for content that has not been appeared yet, kids have to think, make a choice and rigth after this they will know if they were rigth or they were wrong and why. They have to read and think.

The reason to ask just one question in each tale that is not covered in the strory is because if kids want to have the highest score they need to look for more information, ask their parents or guess which of the answers seems to be more logical.

We want they read, but we want they think and learn.

Also we want to say that the narrations are coming soon. And everybody who gets any story now will get the narrations for free when they will be available.

Anthony, here is my personal email and if you have more questions or if you want to tell us anything about the app I will be very happy to hear and response you.

Once again thanks a lot for your comments. They help us to improve the app in order to give the best stories for your kids.
