Learn Word Patterns with Fun Games – iSort Words

iSort Words

The iSort Words app teaches children various forms of word patterns.  It teaches how the beginnings and endings of various words can be split up and combined to form different words and in doing so also teaches vocabulary, spelling and rhyming. There are four games in the app: Swipe Sort, Push Sort, Speed Sort, and Explore. iSort Words via iGameMom

In Swipe Sort, kids swipe a line through the words whose endings match the top word.  The words jump up from the bottom of the screen and you only have till it leaves the screen to swipe.  Do not swipe words that don’t have the same ending, just let those fall back down.  Kids get three strikes before its game over.

In Push Sort, children sort words by pushing them to one of the top words with the same ending. If no words match they are placed in the trash. Depending on the level, kids will have between 2-4 sorting words.

Another game with the three strikes feature is Speed Sort.  In Speed Sort, children sort the center word by dragging it to the word with the matching ending.  With 3 levels, the time to do this varies from 7-3 seconds.

Each of the above 3 games has three levels. Both word complexity and play speed increase with levels. Most common word patterns are covered in the games, such as long vowel and short vowel spelling, diphthong spellings. After each game, kids can see a list of words that they did not do well in the game.

The app all comes together with the Explore game.  Children are presented with floating vowels and upon picking one, are presented with the chosen vowel in the middle of the screen and floating word endings that begin with that vowel.  Once the word ending is chosen, the word ending stays in the middle of the screen and kids are presented with floating word beginnings to choose from.  This game is an endless word making fest!  Choices are all easily reversible too with the back button. This is a good game for kids to learn to identify word patterns and practice rhyming words.
