Math Apps Answering Real Life Questions

iLiveMath Oceans

Today I want to share a series of math apps – iLiveMath series.  It is very unique in a way that it combines math with another subject, such as animals, oceans, transportation.  It helps kids connect math with the real world and see how math are used in real life.

There are several apps in the series, including Oceans, Animals of Africa, Animals of Asia, Speed, Ford Cars, Farm Fresh, and Entomology.  Each app has three levels, covering grade k through 6.

I only reviewed iLiveMath Ocean, but others look very similar in structure, except content. Math Apps for Real Life QuestionsWhen kids open the app, they can pick a level. Level 1 covers Addition and Subtraction; Level 2 adds Simple Fraction, and Level 3 has multiplication and circle geometry.  Once the level is selected, kids can start answering questions. All questions are word math problems related with the theme of the app.  With this Ocean app, one of the Level 2 question is “A photographer counted 51 humpback breaches and 46 peduncle throws. How many acrobatic whale behaviors are counted?” All questions are accompanied with stunning photographs of the theme. For correct answers, kids are reward with short videos that are also theme related.

After kids finish answering questions, they can email their results to parents or teachers. It is a good way to review how many questions they answered right and to keep track of the progress.

iGameMom Comments:

I like iLiveMath app series for its connection with different subjects and the practical math questions. Kids are not just solving another math equation, they are answering real life questions.

I also like their combo package. In addition to math, kids are also learning another subject, like ocean. I see this as a great tool to get kids interested in math via an area of their own interest.  For children who are not interested in math but like some other subjects, such as ocean, animal, this is a perfect series to try to show them the value of math.

iLiveMath currently has 8 apps in the series, all are listed below. All apps are available for iPhone, iPod and iPAD. Each is $4.99 on App Store.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.

  • I like the concept – it’s similar to what I do with daughter in our mental math exercises. How many problems does the app have?

    • According to the intro on app store, there are over a million questions overall.

  • Sounds like a great app! I’ll have to check it out. Thanks!

    • Thanks Nancy. I liked it. Looks like each app in the series covers different math – especially for level 3. You probably want to see which one is a better for you.
