Math Tutor at Home – Math on Video

2nd Grade Math on Video iBook

Math on video is an alternative math tutoring tool for kids and their parents.  Currently they offer titles for Grades  2 and 3. Most Math apps that are currently available are game or drill based. This product is different in that it teaches using short videos and interactive tests.

For the past two weeks we have been reviewing the 2nd grade Math on video program. There are two books for 2nd grade with over 45 videos each (sold separately) .Each topic includes a video tutorial presented by an experienced teacher and a scored quiz to assess comprehension.  For Parents there is also a clear explanation of the topic and how it fits into the curriculum.

The Common Core standards for Second Grade Math are separated into four ‘domains’.

Book 1 covers Operations and Algebraic thinking and Numbers and operations in Base ten

Book 2 covers Measurement and Data, and Geometry

What I liked

  • The long list of Core standards can seem overwhelming to parents. These books do a great job explaining what each one includes and the specific concepts your child needs to understand.
  • The end of lesson quiz gave me a good idea about how well my daughter had grasped the concept or whether she needed to review it again.
  • The books could be used in multiple ways. We used it to go over topics that have challenged DD this year. It was fairly simple to find the topic you need using the contents pages. Alternatively it could be used several times a week to support regular math lessons at home or in school.
  • It is a lot cheaper and less time consuming than learning centers or prvate tutoring.
  • As a homeschooling parent, I really appreciate having another ‘person’ around to explain a concept in a ‘fresh’ way.
  • There are a lot of game based math apps available for practice but this one focuses on teaching the concepts.
  • The videos kept DD’s attention as Ms. Carrie explains and demonstrates clearly.  It helps that the lessons are only about 5 minutes long.

What I didn’t like so much:

The program only covers the basic core curriculum for the specific grade level. It does not cover anything beyond this. For example, the second grade books only include the concept of ‘arrays’, there is no actual Multiplication or division. In second grade most children are introduced to basic Multiplication and Division. To cover this and other extensions on the basic requirements I would suggest that you also get the books for the next grade up. Not surprisingly with so much video content the file size of these books is very large.

Over all I liked this app and my Second grader liked it. I would recommend it to other parents as a very portable and low cost alternative to tutoring and afterschool learning centers.

Math on Vidoe series are iBooks, not apps.  Currently there are two books for Grade 2 and two books for Grade 3, each book is $9.99 on iBookstore.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.

I think this is among the most important information for me. And i am glad reading your article. But wanna remark on few general things, the website style is great, the articles is really nice : D. Good job, cheers

  • Thanks,
Just FYI, you are right about the scope not venturing past a core focus. My wife would agree that 2nd grade would benefit by touching on multiplication and division. However, because the size of the books can get out of hand and Apple limits the size at 2 gigs, we elected to keep the lessons lean. Plus, our website, which will go live August 1st with over 2,000 videos will have deeper lessons available to all the grade levels. We will have 1st, 4th, 5th and high school geometry finished by June 1st and all of the middle school grade levels finished by the end of summer.

    • These are great news. Can’t wait to see your website and the new books.

  • Do you have recommendations for apps that act like flashcards?
