Mental Math for Addition and Subtraction

Mental Math for Addition and Subtraction post image

I have seen many math drill apps in different formats, some are simple drills, some are in a game format. It is helpful for kids to get very efficient with these math operations, so when they solve more complex math problems they don’t have to spend time and energy on these fundamental operations, and can focus on solving the more complex problems. Today I have another app not only drill kids on these math operations, but also teach kids tips and techniques in solving addition and subtraction problems quickly. It is just called Mental Math.

When kid first start the app, they will see 3 taps on the home screen. The one with dices leads you to different math challenges. The one with the graduation hat is the gate to trainings.

There are 5 types of Challenges: Flood, Firefly Hunting, Maze, Siege, and Wall. Each is a themed game that requires players to answer addition and subtraction questions quickly. For example, in Flood, kids have to answer the question before the flood water goes to certain level. In Firefly Hunting, kids need pick a correct answer among several dropping jars before any of them hit the ground.

Some games are played between two players, like the Wall. Each player answers a set of questions, for each correctly answered question, the player moves the wall in between the two players towards the opponent. Once the player answers enough questions correctly and the wall hits the opponent, the player win.

I like the app for the training section. It teaches kids the skills they need to get the answers quickly and correctly. I also like the training method. It is not the text book style of telling kids the rules or principles. Instead it is a game-like training. For example the first training is to teach kids how to estimate. It doesn’t just tell kids the rules for round-up and round-down, it shows number lines with two numbers at the ends of each line, and ask kids to pick the end to which a third number in between is closer. The training sessions are staged, kids have to finish the earlier training to unlock the next one.

Mental Math is available on iPhone, iPod and iPad. It is also available for Android on Google Play. If you have Windowns computer, you can download the program to play on your PC computer: Mental Math for PC.

Thanks so much for this! My son hates using pencil and paper to figure out math. He wants to do it all in his head. Yet he hates drills. This may be our answer!
