Storytelling with Story Wheel

Story Wheel

Storytelling is a great skill to have.  Not only it fosters imagination, it also trains kids logic thinking, helps kids improve self-expression skills, thus better social interaction.  I have reviewed several story telling apps, such as Toontastic and Toontastic Jr, Educreation, Scribble my story.  Today I am going to share another one we’ve been using recently – Story Wheel

Story Wheel is like a writing prompt for young kids who are not writing yet.  When kids open the app, they choose a scene from the wheel they want to create their story in.  Some of the themed scenes are: story teller, pirates, space, knights and princesses.

Once the theme is chosen, kids can add players.  There can be 1-4 players for each story.  Each player takes turns to spin the wheel, which will stop at a picture. Each player has 30 seconds to record his/her story for this picture.  The process goes on till every player wants to stop.  Each story can have a maximum of 12 pages, but kids can stop at any time before 12 pages.  Once the story is finished, kids can add a title to the story and decide if they want to read the book right away or want to share the book with someone.

There are two options for sharing.  I like the option of sharing via iBook.  The app will create a file that you can email to people, and Story Wheel App Reviewed on iGamemomthey can open the file in iBook to read it like a real book.  It is gives kids the sense of a real accomplishment, which in turn will motivate kids to create more stories.  For people who can’t read iBook, kids can choose to share online.  In this case, a URL will be generated.

iGameMom Comments:

I like Story Wheel for several reasons.

First it can take up to 4 players.  It could be a great tool for team building and family interactions.

Second, it doesn’t require writing, so younger kids can join the story creation.

Third is the time limit.  Kids have to finish the story for each page within 30 second, and there is a maximum of 12 pages.  This could be a quick family game at an occasion you don’t have much time but still want to have some fun.

Last, the iBook sharing option gives the “official” feeling about the creation.  I am sure it will help kids want to do more.

Story Wheel is available for iPhone, iPod and iPAD.  It is $2.99 on App Store.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.
