The Adventures of Captain Underpants & Creative Activities from Mom’s Library

Adventures of Captain Underpants

The Adventures of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey from scholastic is a chapter book series geared toward school age boys. This book app is filled with action, thrills, and laughs. Your child can read the book, have the book read to them, or you can read it to your child. The silliness puts a fun spin on reading and a great way to draw in active, adventure seeking kids. The app has three sections: first the chapter book, second an area of three games that go along with the story, and third a soundboard where kids can make their own rude, crude music and noises.

If you are unfamiliar with The Adventures of Captain Underpants, don’t let the title scare you away. It has that funny, witty humor that young boys love. The story is about two boys that love to write comics; their favorite super hero to write about happens to be Captain Underpants. They also love pulling pranks, but when their principal catches their pranks on video he uses the tape to black mail them. The boys decide to hypnotize the principal and get the video tape back. During the hypnosis they turn him into Captain Underpants and he lives out their story adventures in real life. Eventually the boys chase him down and help turn him back into the principal, but from that moment on, all it takes is a snap of their fingers to turn him back into Captain Underpants. Thus the beginning of the series.
Adventure of Captain Underpants AppThe unique thing about this app is the interaction with the story. The three games are based on various parts of the story. Readers have the opportunity to leave the story to play the games at the appropriate time, otherwise the games can also be accessed from the main screen. The first game allows you to practice aiming the hypnosis ring at the principal. The second game utilizes the tilt feature of the iPad to work a skate board through a maze in an attempt to locate Captain Underpants. I recommend making sure the screen is locked for the skate board game, otherwise I found the maze flipping back and forth when I didn’t want it to. The third game comes at the end of the story when Captain Underpants needs to slingshot underpants at Dr. Diaper’s Laser (the villain in the story).

Parents can rest assured while their young-in’s play around in this app that there are: no ads, no social media sharing, no in-app purchasing, no links to websites, and no location-tracking functions.

This story is rather silly, but that’s what makes it fun. Since it’s a chapter book it provides great long-term reading fun. Something that can be read a few chapters at a time. My favorite feature in the story is the flip-book action scene, where readers are encouraged to add their own sound effects as they ‘flip’ the pages to watch the action roll out.

I hope you and your children can get many laughs and giggles from this app.  If you want to learn more about Captain Underpants, you can visit Captain Underpants on Scholastic
