  • What great information! As the father of a four year old terror (he’s a little monster, I swear!) I always catch myself wondering what new book I should get him! Reading to him is the only way to make him be still!

You should do a “preferred reading list”!

I’d sign up, for sure! 🙂

    Great job, guys!

    • iGameMom

Thanks for your interest. Sorry that I did not get back to you earlier, I was traveling outside the country. The Internet connection was not consistent. This giveaway ended May 31. There are other giveaways all the time. The current one is a language app. Check it out here: https://igamemom.com/2012/06/18/four-giveaways-mindsnacks-spanish-chinese-french-esl/

      • I know I missed it! LOL!

I was hoping to inspire you to post a listing of all the cool books for kids you recommend! 🙂

One of our very favorites right now is:

“Martimus at Midnight” by Alina Klein.

(FYI: NO Relation, except we adore her “to the point of adoption now” because of her books and the joy she’s brought to our child!)

It’s about a polar bear that walks kids thru a Natural History Museum … at midnight when all the exhibits come to life and dance and frolic! My son adores it and as a result ,he’s learned about many different animals, both living and extinct! I’ve read it to him so many times he recites the words verabatim now! We LOVE it!

I’ll be looking for that list!

        (Arm-twist, arm-twist, arm-twist!) LOL!

        • iGameMom

Thank you for the “arm-twist”! 🙂 I will start thinking about it. There are so many good ones out there. It also depends on age and interest…

  • I love that book. My son liked it, but had never be on the top of his books. I am keeping it, and once a while I will bring it out and hope he will read it again. 🙂

  • Oh, the places you’ll go- Samuel L. Collins- 14 LOL! Still a favorite, but now he reads it himself! LOL!

  • My older son will be 4 in August, and he begs me for more and more books every night! His current favorite is, “Oh say can you say, dinosaur” by Dr. Seuss, which we picked up on a recent trip to the Natural History Museum in LA. it’s that or “Dinosaurs A to Z: The Ultimate Dinosaur Encyclopedia” that Grandma gave him!

    • iGameMom

      Dinosaur – of course!

  • My 4 year old loves the book, The Gardener, about a little girl living through the Depression who goes to live with her uncle in the city until her parents can find jobs. The story is told through the main character’s letters to her mom, dad and grandmother. My daughter routinely asks me, “Read me Lydia Grace,” (the main character’s name). It’s a lovely story and was also my 8 year old’s favorite book for long time when she was younger.

  • We love children’s books in our house. Our favorite has to be (at least this week!) anything Richard Scary. Our 3-year-old loooooves discovering Goldbug and my 6-year-old tries to pretend it’s too babyish for her (but she adores the Pickle Car).

    • iGameMom

      Interesting sibling dynamic 🙂

  • Sharon McTeir

My 3-year-old son’s favourite story book is Tiddler by Julia Donaldson, closely followed by any of the Lynley Dodd Hairy MacLary books. His favourite non-fiction book is the Usborne Big Book of Dinosaurs. I’m ashamed to say he knows more dinosaur names than I do…

    • iGameMom

You are not alone. My son knows more dinosaur names than I do, too. 😉

  • My son Mike is 13 and loves all things dinosaur-related; I want to open his bedroom up as a gift shop filled with toys, stuffed animals, videos and books, but that’s another story.
His favorite series of books is the “Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaur” books by Gilles Andrae (he has them all), mostly because he likes the way I read it and gives the different characters their own distinctive voices. I enjoy reading at bedtime too! After a long day for both of us, it’s a good way to end with a laugh.

    • iGameMom

What a wonderful way to bond with your child! Your voice is now part of the book and will always be in his memory!

  • Only THREE days left. Tell us what is your child’s favorite bed-time book and win Smithsonian book apps!

  • My four year old comes back to “Guess How Much I Love You” time and time again. My older daughter (8) likes variety, but she never turns down a Skippyjon Jones book.

    • iGameMom

Both books were my son’s favorite for a long time, especially Skippyjon Jones

  • My 6-year-old son loves SEADOGS by Lisa Wheeler. It’s a new book to us, but he has been obsessed for a week. It’s a pirate book where the story is told through song! Really creative and fun!

    • iGameMom

Told by songs – sounds very interesting. Guess you helped pick the book?

  • The only book that beat out my grandson’s beloved StarWars encyclopedia was Snip, Snap and Snurr. I resurrected that book from my own memories… a wonderfully colorful book about Swedish triplets who wanted to give a gift to their mother, and how they earned the money to get what she wanted.

In fact, he and his sister have asked so often for that one, I can now slip wrong words in while reading, and they are delighted to catch me at it and correct me!

Beautiful illustrations. it’s by Maj Lindman

    • iGameMom

      How old is your grandson?
Snip, Snap and Snurr sounds like an interesting story and I am sure the kids can learn something from the book too.
I looked it up quickly, Snip, Snap and Snurr is a series by Maj Lindman, who passed away in 1972. All her books are still availble in the market.
      Thanks Susan for sharing!

      • My grandson, 7, is beginning to really read, and not to be outdone, his little sister, 5, is on the verge. Currently we are delving into Corgiville Fair,by Tasha Tudor, and the children are very engaged with both the story and the marvelous illustrations. It spans the age gap very well, with both domestic details and also suspense! This is a book that can be read in serial form “…(tune in tomorrow night and see what mischief is afoot!”), a good precursor to the longer adventure books ahead.

        Susan

        • iGameMom

Like your idea of “reading in serial form” as the transition to longer books.

          • Their Mom told me that my grandson’s teacher (a very very excellent one) told her that one of the good things to do when reading to kids is to go back and review earlier parts of the story with them before picking up the story line to go on. Review! It gives them a chance to be the expert “rememberer” of earlier details, so they get more involved.

            • iGameMom

I wish someone told that years ago. My son reads fast, but I am not sure how much he retains …
