App Review and Giveaway: Frog Dissection

Frog Dissection

Did you dissect a frog when you were in school?  How did you like it?  Today I am going to introduce an app Frog Dissection.  It brings the whole dissection process onto iPAD.  It won’t replace the real practice, but it is a wonderful tool to learn about the dissection process, the organs, and frog’s body and life.  For those who can’t enjoy the real dissection, this app offers a great alternative to dissecting on a real frog.

The app provides step-by-step instructions on how to dissect a frog with realistic pictures.  For example, kids will hear the instruction: “Select the pins from the tools”.  After kids tap on the pins, they will be told to “Pin the limbs to the dissection pan to keep the specimen in place”. After kids move the pins to the highlighted spots on the limbs, they will hear instructions for the next steps.  All the instructions are very clear and there are visual hints to tell the kids what and where to perform the next step.  The only drawback is there is no re-wind option.  If kids missed something in an earlier step, they cannot go back till they reach the end of the whole dissection process and re-start it again.Frog Dissection App

Once they finished the dissection process, kids can learn about each organ by tapping on them.  There is a short introduction for each organ with 3D models that kids can turn around with a finger.

Besides dissection and organs, the app also has sections on Frog Lifecycle, All About Frogs, Types of Frogs, Human Vs Frog, Wet Lab Process, and Quiz.  The quiz includes multiple choices questions and “drag to the right places” questions.

iGameMom Comments:

Designed for middle and high school kids, Frog Dissection is a great app for pre-view and review of the dissection process.  It is also a great tool for those who are not comfortable with the real dissection but still want to learn the process.  Homeschool families will for sure find this app very helpful.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store button provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The button works for all countries.

I am teaching biology (science) to 9 homeschool students. We will be dissecting frogs in two weeks. This would be a great app for us to explore the frog before actually having to do the dissection. It would be a great alternative for my students who are squeamish.

  • Well, whaddya know? My 9-year-old, animal-loving daughter just asked me yesterday whether kids still have to dissect frogs in school, the way I did when I was in school. She is mortified at the thought, and yet the kid lives and breathes science and math. I can tell there is some level of fascination when I explain to her what dissection is and the purposes it serves. I’ve really got to show her this!

    • Being able to see how things actually work will take a lot anxiety out. This will be a great use of the app.

  • I would love for my 10 year daughter to win this app, she joined the Dissection Club last semester and is doing the second session II next semester- girls need more Science exposure and if she is showing this much interest, I would love for her to have an app to use and show the club to be able to practice at home!

    • wow, they have dissection club for 10 year olds! This is great. I believe this app would help the kids a lot.

  • I would like to win the Frog Dissection app because my daughter currently taking biology and other science class and could greatly benefit from the technology. My son will be entering high school next year and will take biology as well so the app will be well used.
