App Review and Giveaway: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickenson

A Christmas Carol Drawn and Told

Have you read Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol?  Have you read it with your child?  If you want to read or re-read the book, especially if you want to share the story with your child, A Christmas Carol Drawn and Told is a good app to get started.

You can consider this app as an audio book plus beautiful illustrations.  With 300 pages of drawings by acclaimed illustrator Michael Cole and 2 hours of vivid narration from Christian Rodska, the book app unveils how the surly and stingy Scrooge be transformed and start to enjoy the Christmas as a common person.   There is no word to read in this app.  At first, I was disappointed.  But quickly, I realized any addition to the whole screen pictures will be intrusive to the art.  Watching the pictures zoom in and fade away while listening to the story will help the kids have better understanding of the Industrial England and the characters.  If you still want to have text to read, I have found a Kindle book that is FREE right now.  You can find the link at the bottom of this post.A Christmas Carol Drawn and Told App

What the kids learn:

Kids can learn a lot from this story.  There are a lot of topics parents can discuss with kids: how to treat people nicely?  How important is money in our life compared to some other things, such as spending time with family and friends? What is the holiday spirit?

iGameMom Comment:

I think everyone should read this book.  It is a classic with good moral.  Kids too young may not be able to under all the backgrounds, but most children 6 and above should be able to understand the story very well, especially when they listen to it together with a parent.

A Christmas Carol Drawn and Told is available for iPhone, iPod, and iPAD.  It is $0.99 on App store, for limited time.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store button provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The button works for all countries.

Finally found my way over here. 🙂

Traditions… Now that I think of it, we don’t have any. My family has always been weird about the holidays and frankly, everything else which has passed on to me. The freaks.

Thank you for making me think more deeply about our traditions (and lack thereof) because it’s been one of those things way at the bottom of some dusty sticky note in my mind. I am now determined not to let my little one suffer the same fate.

I think I’ll begin by writing out a list of ideas and then solicit some from friends and family. My daughter and I will be attending our first Nutcracker performance this weekend. Maybe that could be a start…

    • My parents are not that big on tradition, we did not do much neither. However, there are always the same 2-3 dishes we had for the holiday, that is something come to my mind when talking about tradition. I feel family traditions serve as an anchor, they help preserve and bring back the memories. Now when I am thinking about the dishes, also come to my mind are the scenes of the holiday seasons when I was my son’s age … It is such a great thing to start a family tradition with kids!

  • Camhy

We have gone to see the play of “A Christmas Carol” several years now during the month of December. This is a classic that all kids need to know!

    • It is a great tradition to do as a family. We probably should start doing something like this.

  • This is one of those stories I’ve seen dozens of times on TV, in movies, and even on stage – but I’ve, for some silly reason, never approached the source material. Great Expectations is such a gorgeous novel, so why I’ve read nothing else of Dickens’s, I don’t know. Thank you for the inspiration. Happy Christmas!

  • Our kids favorite tradition, I think , is opening a present with christmas pajamas every christmas eve. We also all love sitting together on the sofa and reading the story of Jesus’ birth at 5ish a.m. before opening presents christmas morning (yeah, my kids are up EARLY).

  • I agree, everyone should read this book (and re-read this book). Great story which most age groups can relate on some level. I am glad to see this app of this wonderful story. Thanks for the post.

    • That is why it is classic, never out of print. We can always learn something new each time we read it again.

  • I love this book. My son is reading it in 7th grade English class right now and it’s so fun to hear his comments and thoughts about it. Thanks for this info.!

    • Kids always give us something unexpected, don’t they? This is why we have kids, make us think differently … 🙂

  • One of my all-time favorite books. I read it every year at Christmas time (just read it last week). The app looks great too. Wish I still had little ones around to share it with 😀

  • Thanks for this recommendation – bought the app (on Android) this morning and my seven-year-old has been glued to it ever since! 🙂

    • Wonderful! My son was the same, once he started the book, he did not want to move. 🙂

  • Thanks for the info on this app. One of our traditions that we do each year is to read A Christmas Carol. I am sure they would enjoy this app with all the illustartions. It sounds great!

    • wow, what a good tradition. It is a beautiful app. Hope you win!
