eBooks Went Free: A Pirate Adventure and More

No Twiddle Twaddle Site

Today I am doing a post trade with Bethany Winston from No Twiddle Twaddle.  While she is posting here on iGameMom, I am posting “Free apps for your iPhone/iPAD” on No Twiddle Twaddle.  Make sure go to her site to read my post after reading her article here.

As a quick reminder, you don’t need a Kindle device to read Kindle books.  For instructions on how to read Kindle books on your iDevice or computer, please visit an earlier post HERE.

Hi! I’m Bethany from the kid lit and play blog No Twiddle Twaddle where I review children’s books, create playful learning activities for children, and almost daily review and write lists of FREE kids’ eBooks.

I write my lists mainly from books in the Amazon Kindle Store, but if you don’t have a Kindle Fire don’t worry! You can actually download these books onto almost any sort of electronic device including iPads and even a PC through the free Kindle reading app.

While lots of blogs write about free Kindle books, my lists are unique in that I only list children’s books (excluding those with mature content) and I actually read many of the books that I list. So, if you don’t like sifting through self-published rough drafts with five-star reviews written by the author, my lists are designed just for you. Of course, with around 80-150 new books available each day, I can’t catch everything. But, I do try!

While these books are FREE at time of posting, the prices will typically go back up to normal within 24-72 hours. So, download today and check the price before downloading. Also, my prices are based on the US store and international customers may be charged a surcharge.

Here are today’s recommended free kid’s Kindle books:

A Pirate Adventure

Pie-Rits: A Pirate Adventure by Julia Dweck and illustrated by Fian Arroyo

In this bakery spoof containing lots of freshly baked puns, Cherry the Cupcake gets swept off on an adventure on the high seas with a young French bread and his flakey companion the crescent roll. Will they be able to save the stolen dough from the pie-rits?

Kite Readers has won awards for their cutting-edge formatting of eBooks, rivaling large competitors such as Disney-Hyperion. The illustrations in this book are excellent and the writing witty.

If You are So Smart

If You’re So Smart, How Come You Can’t Spell Mississippi? by Barbara Esham and illustrated by Mike and Carl Gordon

Katie is shocked to find out that her dad (who is SO smart) can’t spell a first grade spelling word like “Mississippi”. When her dad explains that he has dyslexia, she decides to take a trip to the library and learn more about all the smart people who struggled with dyslexia but accomplished great things.

This picture book is cutely illustrated and drives home the message that many kids who struggle in school are actually very smart. I would highly recommend this book as a way of encouraging children with dyslexia that they can succeed. However, I was disappointed to see no definition of how dyslexia actually works (Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco explains dyslexia much better.)

Winter

Winter by Dianne Miller

Dianne Miller is one of the more talented self-published authors whose books occasionally appear for free. You can read a short interview that explains more about her background as an artist and the inspiration that her own children provided for her writing.

In this book (only one book in the Little Bunny series), Little Bunny forms a snowman and ends up cold after clothing the snowman from his own winter-wear.

Andromeda Moon

Andromeda’s Moon by Ben Grimley and Annie Grimley

Not only does this middle-grade novel feature a strong female protagonist, but it also teaches facts about space.

Lets Look at Excavators

Let’s Look at Excavators! by Matthew Price

While the cover image is a little rough, the inside of this eBook is actually quite nice. I was surprised to find full-page landscape pages with tap-to-zoom text (just double tap the text and it enlarges nicely). The photos were high-quality, and the pages contained lots of interesting information about excavators.

You can also download Let’s Look at a Bulldozer! by Matthew Price for free today.

The Tortoise and the Hare

The Tortoise and The Hare and The Jetpack by Steven Novak

This kids’ eBook is a cute twist on the traditional fable of The Tortoise and the Hare adding not only a jet-pack but some humorous illustrations. The writing while fun does need some editing, and I noticed one capitalization error.

Tigers by Susan Seymour

Tigers by Susan Seymour

This non-fiction picture book contains high-quality photos with facts interspersed with quiz questions.

If you enjoyed this list, be sure to stop by No Twiddle Twaddle for almost daily free eBook selections. You also can find me on most social media platforms including my favorite places to hangout: Facebook and Google+.

Thank Bethany for a great post.  Don’t forget to visit her site for “FREE Apps for your iPhone/iPAD“.  I also have her site logo on the sidebar if you need visit her some other time.

Have really been enjoying being able to download apps for my grandson on my Android when you feature those, and also forwarding your posts to my daughter when I can’t download them, since she has one of those “i” things (or several, I’m old and unsure, lol). And I really like that you introduced us to another great blog, No Twiddle Twaddle, which will also be a wealth of resources for mothers of young children. Thanks so much for being great at keeping an eye out for these things!
