Free App: Learn Sun Related Science with DIY Sun Science

DIY Sun Science

DIY Sun Science is a free science app for kids designed by UC Berkeley Lawrence Hall of Science. It has instructions on 13 hands-on learning activities helping kids learn and explore about the Sun. It also has many amazing sun related images and videos. What is most interesting is the sun observatory showing live images of the sun from a NASA satellite. For those who prefer using computers, you can access the same content on the app’s website DIY Sun Science website
Wonderful kids science activity guide with multimedia files about the Sun - DIY Sun Science is a website provide well designed science lessons and activity ideas for kids to learn about the sun.

Activity Instructions:

There are 13 activities, grouped into two groups: Any Day Activities and Sunny Day Activities. All instructions have material lists, step-by-step guides, and detailed explanations about the science. They also tell you how much time each activity takes, so you can plan accordingly. The app also gives an age level. It looks like those age levels are for the kids to do everything themselves. If a parent would like to help on certain part of the tasks, a younger kid should be able to participate. For example, to bake s’mores in a solar oven, parents can cut foil to the size, and let the kids lay the foil inside the pizza box; or parents cut a square hole on the pizza box lid, while kids make s’mores.

Some other activities that younger kids can understand and enjoy: Sun Cookie, Solar Convection, Big Sun and Small Moon.

Activities need elementary knowledge and skills, such as math: Measure the Sun’s Size, Ancient Sun Observations, Detect Solar Storms.

Sun Related Images and Videos:

There are 3 groups of images and videos: The Dynamic Sun; Studying the Sun; Sun-Earth Connections. All images are quite stunning. Each image has a short description explaining what the image is about. All the videos are couple minutes long, but very informative.

Sun Observatory:

The observatory shows live images of the Sun from a NASA satellite. Each color of the Sun represents a different wavelength of light, and some features of the Sun can only be seen in certain wavelengths. This observatory provides a slider for kids to see images from two different wavelengths at the same time.
