Free App: National Geographic Young Explorer

National Geographic Young Explorer

Recently I found a wonderful free resource from National Geographic for kids – National Geographic Young Explorer Magazine. It is available for free on their website, and as apps for both iPad and Android devices.

There are 7 issues every year. Each issue covers 3 topics about nature, such as rain; plant roots; animals cover – fur, feather, and scales. Each page is mostly a big image with one line of text. The images are stunning. Kids can choose to read themselves, or tap on the litter speaker to listen to the narration. While it is read, each single word is highlighted. Free National Geographic Young Explorer Magazine - on computer and tablet

In the app, there are two copies for each issue, one is in English and one is in Spanish. We had fun reading in both languages.  I have my son read it in English first, then in Spanish to see how much Spanish he can understand. While he reads on iPad in Spanish, I have the same issue in English up on my computer. When he is not sure about a word in Spanish, he can look it up from the English issue.  It is a fun way to learn Spanish.

On the website, there is a “For Teachers” section for each issue.  In that, you will find an overview for each topic in that issue, background knowledge on the topic, things to do before the reading, language arts in the reading, with free printables of activities, test and answer keys.  They are all well thought of and nicely designed. The activity printables are layout in a way that you can just print out and hand it to the kids.

To read the magazine on computer, you can follow this link National Geographic Young Explorer Magazine. To read the magazine on your mobile devices, follow the links provided at the bottom of this post to download the corresponding app for your device. When you open the app for the first time, you will be asked to enter user name and password. Use “explorer” for both user name and password. Now you have access to all the available issues. To download an issue onto your device, simple tab on that issue’s thumbnail. I do have to warn you. The file size is big, it may take a while to have the whole issue downloaded.

Overall it is a wonderful learning resource for kids. Although it is designed for grade K and 1, kids of younger or older will also enjoy the wonderful pictures and fun scientific facts about nature. It can also be used as a Spanish or English learning material, depends on your native language.

National Geographic Young Explorer can be access on computer and mobile devices. The app is available on iPad and Android devices. It is free.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.
