Improve Reading with Sports Reading Comprehension App

Improve Reading with Sports Reading Comprehension App post image

If you have a child who likes sports, this is a great reading comprehension app for him/her to use. It is designed for kids in middle to upper elementary school (age 9 to 11). All articles in the app are about sports, and are specially written for this app. It is currently free for limited time.

When you first start the app, you can go the Settings to choose a password for yourself, and then add students. You don’t need enter their real name or any contact information, just a nick name for tracking purpose.

There are 10 articles in the app:
Bobby Jones
Fenway Park
Jackie Joyner Kersee
Jordan Burroughs
Kevin Durant
Mia Hamm
Nadia Comaneci
Speed Skating
Table Tennis
Undefeated Miami Dolphins

Kids tap on Start Here to pick an article to read. After they finish reading the article, they can start answering questions on the right side of the screen. I like that the questions and the article are on the same screen, so kids can scroll the article up and down to look for answers if they don’t remember what the article said about the question. I also like the automatic highlight of the relevant sentences after kids answer a question, although I do wish the ability to turn off the highlight sometime. It is nice to be able to find the part you need to read right away, but looking for particular information in the article should be part of reading training for kids, and should not be ready for them without them putting in work.

Each article takes about 5-10 minutes to finish reading and answering questions. After kids finish all the questions, they will see how many questions they answered correctly, and as parents or teachers, you can get the progress and email the reports.

Sports Reading Compression is a nice reading comprehension resource for kids in middle and upper elementary school. It will definitely attract interest from kids who love sports. It is available for both Apple and Android devices.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store link provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The link works for all countries.

I work with students who are visually impaired, train teachers of the visually impaired on how to use iPad Accessibility features and work with app developers on developing accessible apps. I have heard great things about your Sports Reading Comprehension app; however, when I tried the app, it is not accessible. VoiceOver – the iPad’s build-in screen reader – does not read the story text. Please consider making your apps accessible!

    • Diane, I share apps, but I don’t develop apps. I in fact have no connection with the app developers. This is a great feedback for the app developer of this app.
