Learn Math with Dinosaur Train Classic in the Jurassic, Jr

Dinosaur Train Classic In the Jurassic Jr

My 4 year old hates educational games. He doesn’t delete them, he just avoids them.  Dinosaur Train Classic in the Jurassic, Jr. made a difference.  From the PBS KIDS show Dinosaur Train, it keeps his attention!  The app focuses on various math related subjects, such as weight, distance, and height, in fun and tactile ways.  It has three games:

Bridge Builder

By far, this is my 4-year-old son’s favorite. There are two cliffs with a dinosaur on the edge of one and kids have to get him to the other.  To start, kids simply draw a line from the one cliff to the other and the game tells the kids the distance units between the two cliffs.  Kids then choose two from three bunches of logs that add up to the units they need for a bridge.  Once kids make their bridge, the dinosaur crosses it and then kids get to build another bridge.  My4-year-old boy played with it for hours.  He seems to never get it right the first time, but the choices aren’t too many so he doesn’t get frustrated.

Chow TimeDinosaur Train Classic in the Jurassic Jr

This was the favorite of the 5 1/2 year old. Kids have to find the right amount food for each dinosaur.  There is a giant scale and they place a rock on it. Kids have to pick from four bunches of food to add to the scale to balance the weight of the rock. Once kids get the weight right and press the checkmark, the dinosaur eats them.  My 5 and half year old liked seeing how many different combinations of the food she could get. She would methodically try each combination before pressing that checkmark.  It is great for kids to know there are more than one solutions to the problem.

All-Star Sorting

In this game, kids simply sort the different sized dinosaurs in the way they are told to.  There are three to as many as five dinosaurs to be sorted. Once kids do it correctly, they can place the dinosaurs into different sized homes.  My son was a little confused at first, he wanted to put the dinosaurs into the homes directly without sorting them by size.  Once I showed him, he knew to get the dinosaurs in order first.

NerdyBaker Comments:

Overall I liked this app a lot, so much that I’m looking for some similar apps for the little ones. It is very engaging.  The app includes a “sticker sheet” with a dinosaur landscape background that kids can add their stickers to.  The stickers include various dinosaurs, plants, and rocks.  After adding stickers to the picture, kids can save them in the photo album. It is always a big hit with my kids.

Dinosaur Train Classic in the Jurassic, Jr. is available for iPAD only. It is $1.99 on App Store.

We count out fun things that we see out and about! Also point out patterns we see etc.

my 4 year old is opposed to any conscious learning (alphabet, numbers, etc) so I’m hoping this is an app he’ll use. We sneak in math often with food: four more bites of x and you can have five smarties etc. we also count things while reading books – now many people are swimming? Etc

    • Math is every where in our life. You are doing a wonderful job building math into his other activities.

This app sounds great! My 3.5 year old was counting his food today and asking me how many were left after each bite… Intro to subtraction, I guess? Thanks for the chance to win!

I have a 3.5 yr old and we find maths everywhere around us.. so numbers are second nature. Count steps as we climb..first singly ,then skip count ; count as we swing in 10s, then 100s ; countdown as the lift goes down….sort clothes in piles ; divide potato chips among the three of us ;shop with coins and price tags, measure water and fill different size bottles..measure with all kinds of things as scales..with hands, dinsoaurs, legoblocks…its all maths!

    • These are great ways teaching math to young kids. They also help the child understand math is useful for everyday life.

  • I will wait until I get home, fire up the iPad and get this app (with your link)! My 4 year old son loves math, and I’ve been looking for apps for him to nurture that. And of course, what 4 year old boy doesn’t LOVE Dinosaur Train! Thanks so much 🙂
