Life Lessons from Little House on the Prairie

Life Lessons from Little House on the Prairie post image

I love historical movies and TV shows. I was excited when I got an opportunity of free set of DVDs to review Little House on the Prairie. If you are in the US, you probably already know the book series and the TV show. If you are not from the US, the Little House is a book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, about American frontiers’ life in the late 19th century. It depicts the life of the Ingalls family, the hardships and joys of their life. The TV show series is based on the books, successfully brought the stories live on the screen. There are over 200 episodes in the series.

At first I was worried that the kids in the story are mostly girls, my son may not like it. After watching it with him, I was glad that he’s interested. There are so many good lessons we learned from the show, and here are just some.

1. Always have a way to entertain yourself, no matter how hard life is.

Life as pioneers was hard. The Ingalls family had experienced all kinds of losses, but they never forgot to enjoy life. I loved watching dad play the fiddle and the girls listening, sometimes dancing with the music, sometimes going to sleep with it.

2. Never stop helping others, even at a time you feel you have nothing to offer. You will be surprised what you can offer if you have the heart to help.

When the crop damaged by the hail, all men were going out of town to find jobs to support the families. Laura’s dad walking on the broken shoe that he tied together with a string from someone he met on the road, he shared his limited food with another father they met on their way to looking for jobs, while knowing that probably is the last of his food. There is always something you can offer, even if it is just a shoe string.

3. Never lose faith even after something terrible happened. In fact that is the time you need it the most.

The book and TV series has a strong religion value. However, even if you don’t share the same religion, you can still benefit the strong faith the Ingalls family shares. It is the strong faith, no matter what it is, that helps to carry you over the hardships.

4. Hurting back never helps.

Sometimes you will be hurt by someone, it maybe the others’ intention or maybe happened unintentionally. Hurting back may make you feel better at the moment, but it usually makes you feel worse afterwards.

5. Never be afraid of being yourself.

Many times we like to be a person that others like, or try to fit in a model we believe that most people will approve. But if it is not yourself, it will tire you quickly. It is best just be yourself and people will learn to accept you as whatever you are. If they can’t accept it, too bad.

We have not finish the whole series. These are what we learned so far, and these are the talking points we are having as a family after watching the show.
