On Beyond Bugs: All about Insects -The Cat in the Hat Learning Library

On Beyond Bugs All about Insects DrSeuss

The release of On beyond Bugs: All about Insects couldn’t have been better timed for us. We are just finishing up a month long Butterfly project. This book App by Trisha Rabe is the latest release in the Science themed Cat in the Hats Learning Library. Cat in the Hats Learning Library is a series of apps iGameMom recommended for Best Natual and Animal Science Apps for Elementary Kids.

The Cat in the Hat and Friends embark on another  journey to teach Sally and Dick about world of insects. While the Cat is rhyming, the Insects are chirping, chewing, flying and glowing, Thing 1 and Thing 2 pop up throughout the book with interesting facts.  On Beyond Bugs - All About Insects from Cat In The Hat Learning Library

App features:

  • The book can be Read aloud or used in ‘Read to Me’ mode.
  • Individual words can be tapped and they will be highlighted and read aloud.
  • You can also tap each picture and hear it’s name.

The line drawings of the insects are colorful and ‘Seussical’ but still realistic. Each page is interactive, tapping on characters will make them move, some can even be repositioned. It is a longer book with a lot of information. The interaction kept our Preschooler’s attention and she has asked me to read it to her several times already. Her favorite insects in the book were the fireflies. Our 2nd grader read it herself  and was excited to see the animated version of the Monarch Butterfly life cycle.

The “Tour guide” Cat in the Hat taught us a lot!  I highly recommend the app.  Kids will learn many interesting facts about the fascinating six-legged creatures, from butterflies and crickets to fireflies and honeybees: how insects see, smell, communicate and pollinate. Thing 1 and Thing 2 also have information cards with interesting facts about the insect world.  Tapping on highlighted word, kids will get instant word defination.  There are also so many ways you could take this app beyond the screen.

Language Arts: choose a favorite bug and write or narrate an Acrostic poem.
Art: Make a Paper plate lady bug or spider.
Math: Create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the characteristics of Insects and Spiders.

Hope you will enjoy the app as much as we do. For more apps about bugs, check out another Fun Bug Apps for Kids – Grandma Loves Bugs. This sounds like a wonderful resource to use in both preschools and kindergartens as well as with children at home. My children just love science units on the kinds of bugs and especially the metamorphosis of the butterfly.

We’ve grown butterflies in a jar after collecting caterpillars from pea pods, made volcanoes out of clay and filled them with vinegar and baking soda. Observed our backyard. We learn from simple things just at home, observe them. While on long car trips, my kids and I couldn’t help from exploring the places we drive by and in a way active learning takes place. We learned two famous rivers in our country by driving past them. It’s fun overall!!!

    • wow, you have done a lot. Keep up the good work. I am sure kids love those activities.

My kids love all kinds of science experiments. The older ones are only 6 years old though, so nature experiments and exploration are all the rage right now. We live near a small state park and beach. At low tide we explore tidepools and at school they have learned about the water cycle. The local utility even had someone come by the school to show how electricity is created and brought to houses. The older of the two twins won a local contest to draw a poster talking about earth day. It was so sweet! Thanks for the post. I will have to check it out!

    • Sounds like you have young scientists in the house. I am sure they will like this app series.

We haven’t really done much if any of hands on science experiments at home but we have enjoyed many at our local museums and zoo – a very simple fun one was with oil and water 🙂
