Rainforest from Britannica Kids

Britannica Kids Rainforests

Rainforest is an encyclopedia from Britannica Kids.  It is designed for kids age 8 to 12.  Like other Britannica Kids apps, Rainforest is a well-designed multimedia reference about world’s rainforests, including types of rainforest; layers of rainforest; the animals, plants and people who live there; and environmental threats and challenges.

After kids open the app, they can navigate through the app via a wheel at the bottom of the screen.  The short articles are in sections organized by topics, such as “the types of Rainforests”, “layers of rainforests”.  Photos and videos are embedded in the articles.

There are interesting forest-themed interactive games including jigsaw puzzles, memory match.  Another game is Magic Square.  Kids can scramble the pieces of an image by shaking the device, and then put every piece together to remake the picture.  The Brush off game lets kids brush the layers to reveal images of rainforest animals and then try to guess what they are.  As you can see, all games are built upon the contents in the articles.  Playing games is the reinforcement of what the kids learned.Rainforests - App by Britannica Kids

There is a map. Kids can see where they are and find out how far the nearest rainforest is.  After studying everything about rainforest, kids can choose to take a test to find out how much they have learned about rainforest.

iGameMom Comments:

Rainforest is designed for kids.  With rich and scientifically correct information, the whole package is at the appropriate kids’ level.  The language, the vocabulary, the length of the article, and the games, all are authentic and engaging.   It is a great app to have, especially for science and animal lovers.

Rainforest works on iPhone, iPod and iPAD.  It is $4.99 on App Store.
