App Went FREE: Toca Hair Salon

Toca Hair Salon

Toca Hair Salon is another app by Toca Boca, who developed Toca Doctors, Toca Kitchen, and Toca Store.  All are recommended by iGameMom.  For limited time, Toca Hair Salon is FREE on App Store.

In Toca Hair Salon, kids will be hair dressers or stylists.  They will cut hair for one of the 6 characters: a red-head boy, a pink hair girl, a guy with orange hair, a bear, a lion, and a dog.  Tools and items they can use include: scissors, electric hair trimmer, hair dryer, comb, hair colors, shampoo, towel, and hair accessories.  There is also something called G.R.O that makes the hair grow back.  If kids cut the hair too short, they can use some G.R.O to have the hair grow longer instantly.  There are hair colors.  Kids can color the hair in the way they like.

While getting the hair cut, the character shows different reactions: smile, shocked, worried, … These reactions add fun to the play.  They also offer opportunities for the kids to learn to pay attention to other people’s feelings.

Like all other Toca apps, it is a free play app, with no time limits.  Once the kids are satisfied with the hair cut, they can use the built-in camera to take a picture.

What the kids learn:Toca Hair Salon

In addition to styling and coloring, kids learn the basic work process (for almost everything): design (think of a hair style), prepare (wash hair), try and error (use G.R.O), execute (cut hair), polish (style with hair dryer and color).

Kids will also learn that many times it is not about what they themselves like, instead, it is about what the other person likes.

How parents can help:

Parents can help point out the steps when doing a project.  If the child jumps into cutting hair without much thinking, the parent can ask her/him how long the hair should be, what color will look good?

Parents can also help kids recognize the characters’ reaction.  Questions a parent can ask: “How do you think the bear feels about the hair cut”?  If the character doesn’t like the hair cut, ask “what can you do differently next time”?

iGameMom Comments:

Designed for kids age 3 and up, Toca Hair Salon is a great free play app offering valuable learning experience.  There is a “for parents” letter located at the top-left corner.  In the letter, the developer offers some good tips for parents on how to interact with kids during the play.

It works on iPhone, iPod, and iPAD.  It is FREE for Limited Time on App Store.

There is another one called “Toca Hair Salon – Christmas Gift”.  It is also FREE.  There are only two characters in this app: Santa and a tree.

If you would like to check it out or purchase it, please use the App Store button provided below. The cost is the same to you, but iGameMom gets a small percentage. Thanks for your support! Note: The button works for all countries.

Shew, your blog is really an eye-opener. We in South Africa are soooo behind times! Do you think there would be a market for children’s stories in ebook or slide show on IPad? We’re currently working on a really cute story for tots.
