In my post How to manage in-app purchase I suggested not link your App Store account with your credit card. Instead, link it with a gift card. But how can you do it? Putting in credit card information is part of account setting up process, and it seems there is no way to get around. While, if you set up the account in a typical way, you do have to put in credit card information. Here I am going to share a way to set up the account, so that you don’t need link the account to a credit card.
First, sign out your existing account on your device. You can do so by tapping on Featured at the bottom of the screen. Then scroll down to the bottom again, tap on “Apple ID: firstname.lastname@example.org”, then Sign Out.
After you sign out your existing account, find a FREE app on the App Store. Usually, you can find some free app on “What is hot” section within Featured. It is important that you find a FREE app.
This will bring up a screen asking you choose between “existing account” or “new account”. Tap on Create New Apple ID. You will be asked to put in your Country and Agree the Term of Service. Then you will see a screen like this:
Put in your email, password, Security Questions, and Date of Birth. Remember to put in a Rescue Email as a way to reset your password in case you forget the password. Tap on Next. This brings up the billing screen.
Keep “None” checked, and make sure all credit cards are un-checked. You can put in a iTune Gift Card Code if you want to, but you don’t have to. You do have to put in Billing address and Phone number. Tap Next. You will see this verification screen. For sercurity purpose, I blured out my email address, but you should see the email address you used to sign up the account on this screen.
Now you have to do is to open your email and click the verification link. You now have an App Store account with no credit card attached. This way you don’t have to worry about hundreds dollars being charged on your credit card.
