Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions is an app from National Wildlife Federation (NWF). It is the first of the series of Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures. In the app, kids will learn everything about lions by following Ricky Raccoon to visit Lars the Lion and experiencing a lion’s life. Kids will explore an interactive photo story, play five fun-filled games, and create music, animals, pictures, and stories.
There are three parts in the app:
Explore: Lars the Lion and Ricky Racoon take the kids around where the lions live, and share interesting stories and fun facts. Kids will enjoy the tour with eye-catching wildlife photography, engaging videos and slide shows, and playful animated infographics.
Play: there are 6 games kids can choose from.
Photo Safari: find the 11 lions in Lars’ pride by surveying a 360° view of the African plains.
Sound Match: pair animals with the sounds they make.
Hide-and-Seek: find the cubs hidden in the grass by tilting the iPad. I liked the semi-3D view of the field.
Jigsaw Puzzle: piece together animal photos.
What’s Wrong: identify humorous mistakes in a wildlife scene
Create: there are 4 activities in this section.
Animal Piano: compose really “wild” music
Sticker Board: find stickers in the photo story and use them to create lively pictures
Animal Builder: mix and match body parts to make hundreds of animals—serious or silly
Trail Tales: write funny fill-in-the-blank stories
I love Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions. It integrates multimedia materials in the learning as part of the whole story. The learning activities are fun and are closely related to the learning topics. The transitions between different elements, story to video, to games,… are all natural and smooth. It is a great app for kids age 4 to 7 to learn about Lion.
Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions is available on iPAD only. It is $4.99 on App Store.
