MoMA Art Lab is a creative art app from Museum of Modern Art. It helps kids learn about modern art: how to create and how to appreciate the art. It is free for a limited time.
When kids first open the app, they will go through a tutorial how to use the app, which is very helpful. Once they finish the quick tutorial, kids are free to explore and create. The creation part is very intuitive. At the bottom of the screen, kids can choose different shapes and colors to add to the canvas. They can change the size and rotate each shape with two fingers. They can also add drawings by choosing different stroke styles. Once they are done, they can take a picture of their production.
What I really liked is the Activities section. Parents should really guide children to visit the section. Currently there are 9 activity ideas. Under each idea, the app shows an artist art and suggests creation ideas for a new art project. One idea is Draw with Scissors. It showcases an art collage that is made with brightly painted paper by a French artist Henri Matisse. It then leads kids to the creation section, where kids can cut some bright colored “paper” out to make their own collage. Some other ideas you can find in the section: create a mobile, draw from instruction.
