Free App: Explore Nature Science with Online Games and Photo Hunt post image

Plum’s Photo Hunt app and the Plum Landing website take learning life and nature science to a whole new level.  The Photo Hunt app focuses on the immediate world around you and the Plum Landing website focuses on a few different ecosystems of earth and takes the life sciences global.
Free Games Teaching Kids Nature and Life Science

The Photo Hunt app is perfect for the yard or the park.

The Photo Missions ask kids to find anything from trash, clouds, birds, rocks, and the list goes on.  There are a few items up for interpretation, like finding amazing or funny things, and that is when the real learning happens. The Photobombs allow for a member of the Plum Landing crew, from the Blorbian alien Plum or any of the other five earthling crew members, to photobomb one of your pictures of nature.  Kids can then send the photo straight from the app to the website.  The kids are quite excited that their photobomb made to the website!

The Plum Landing website is simply the most fun I’ve ever had on an educational website for children.  Kids or parents can log in to save points earned during games or play without signing in.  There are 4 games that explore different ecosystems: the Australian Outback, Belize Mangroves, Canadian Rockies, and the Borneo Rainforest. Another four games help kids understand how to build those same ecosystems.

Exploring the ecosystems takes kids through 12 levels of identifying life forms in a particular landscape. The game identifies the plant or animal for the child, and kids must make sure to take pictures of three life forms without using the entirety of the five pictures allowed.

Building the ecosystems gives kids 12 “days” to build and maintain a healthy ecosystem by adding 5 different life forms a day, adding anything from the tiniest bug to the biggest predator and all variety of plants in between from that landscape.  The Nature Sketchpad gives children a mission to draw nature objects, for instance, what you would find in your backyard or what a moose would eat.  The sketchpad has some truly unique stamps that make drawing a nature picture very easy.

The Videos on the site showcase each different landscape, some showcasing Plum and her crew and some featuring real kids experiencing nature or experimenting with it.

The Ship part of the site showcases Plum and her crew with a snapshot autobiography for each, highlighting the picture aspect of the site and app.  The Picture section of the site is where the photos kids made on the Photo Hunt app or in Sketchpad go once they are complete and sent to Plum.  If you signed in, the My Stuff section of the app is where kids can buy stickers with their points to change the profile picture.

The app also has a section for parents and educators.  The parent section has tons of ideas for outdoor science related activities and experiments.  The educators section arranges some of the videos and incorporates activities into different lessons that can be utilized in after school programs, summer camps, or other settings.

NerdyBaker Comments:

Sometimes I get to review an app that fits our family perfectly.  My little ones are enamored with bugs and plants, since we try to grow a few things in our yard, the app was perfect for them to walk around our yard and explore together.  My 10 year old is a bit of a science buff and was just as enamored with the ecosystem building games on the website.  I confess I played those over and over.

Plum Landing is a free website, you can access from computer or mobile devices. Plum’s Photo Hunt is a free app on the app store.  It is available on iPhone and iPod Touch.
