After I posted “How to Child-proof iPAD”, I got a lot questions about child-proof iPAD cases. I did some research and found 3 cases that are good for babies and toddlers. For iPAD cases for older kids, please visit HERE.
What to consider when choosing iPAD cases for babies and toddlers:
First of all, it is the drop protection. You want a case that can absorb the shock. Next, you want to have a screen protector that is liquid proof. In addition, you want to make sure the ports for charger, headphone, camera, and speaker are all protected. How about the home button? Do you want it be covered as well? The tricky part about covering the ports and home button is – although you want all the ports be protected, you still need easy access to these ports. Other things to consider: easy to grab by the little hands, easy to carry with when travel, and can stand babies’ abuse (chewing, banging, …). At last, the iPAD case is to protect iPAD, it should not interfere iPAD’s functionality.
iPAD cases for babies and toddlers:
After looking through about 20 iPAD cases, I found 3 that meet all the criteria mentioned above.
Griffin Survivor: the maker of the product claimed it meets or exceeds US Department of Defense Standard 810F. I don’t know exactly what “810F” mean, but it sounds very impressive. Information from their web site is quite helpful: “Survivor is built on a shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame clad in rugged, shock absorbing silicone. A built-in screen protector seals your Multi-Touch display from the outside environment, while hinged plugs seal the dock connector, camera lens, headphone port, hold switch and volume controls. The included stand clips on, then folds open for landscape viewing and typing.” The stand allows you to put up the iPAD without hand holding it. This could be handy with babies. Here is a video with a lot details about the case.
It is $80 at the manufacture’s site, but it is only $40 at Amazon right now. If you are shopping around, this is a really good deal.
Gumdrop Drop Series: Similar to Griffin Survivor, Gumdrop Drop series has drop absorption, screen cover, and port covers with easy port access. One thing it doesn’t have is the stand, which is offered by Griffin Survivor. It is $60 at manufacture’s site. Amazon has it for $56 right now.
Trident Kraken: Similar to the two above, but with no stand. It is $70 at manufacture’s site. Currently it is $34 at Amazon.
