Beautiful Poetry App for Kids of All Ages – A Word’s a Bird

When my son was young, we read together every day, at least at bedtime. Once he gets to school age and is able to read by himself, we have not been reading together as much, not to mention read aloud together. I wanted to re-start our reading together time, and found poetry being great to read aloud with kids. They expose kids to sound and rhythms in addition the contents itself, and there are also many imaginary activities you can do after reading. Today I am sharing a beautiful poetry app A Word’s a Bird.

We loved this app, there are a lot details built in the scenes that I have been discovering every time we read it, even today. It is a collection of 3 poems by Orel Protopopescu, one for each of the months of April, May and June. A Bird's a Word Poetry App for Kids Each poem is accompanied by a movie like scene that plays out by itself with interactive elements built in. The scenes are water color illustrations with inviting and vibrate colors. Each scene has soothing natural sound in the background, matching the narration of the poem. For April, it is a mother duck leading a group ducklings swimming in a pond. Tapping on the white flowers will produce music notes. Kids can create their own music tunes by tapping on different flowers, and then the ducklings will replay whatever the tunes kids created.

There is a lines under certain words, tapping on those words will bring up definitions of those words. This is a nice feature for kids to enrich their vocabulary, and learn how to use words in poems.

A Word’s Bird is a really well made app with lovely poems, gorgeous pictures, and carefully crafted animations. It is a great app that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages, a great one to have to read with your kids. I only wish there are more poems in the app.
