Book App: Just a Little Music – Little Critter

Just a Little Music Book App

Today I have a book app to share with you: Just a Little Music by Mercer Mayer. Mercer Mayer is the author of the Little Critter books. Little Critter is the main character and is a furry little character that resembles a porcupine or hedgehog, however the author has never identified what exact animal he is. His first book dates back all the way to 1975 so he has been around a while. It’s great to see storybooks from my childhood transform into eBooks for my kids.

In this particular story Little Critter gets to go to a music store and pick out a new instrument to take home. After trying many instruments he choose the drums. He plays them a lot at home the following days and as you can imagine it was rather noisy and annoying to his family members, resulting in his little sister taking them and hiding it from Little Critter. After that incident Little Critter gets music lessons and dreams of the day he gets to play his drums in a rock-and-roll band.  Little Critter Just a Little Music Book App

This book app features three reading options: 1) Read to Me 2) Read it myself 3) Auto Play. In the first two selections, the reader needs to turn the page, the third selection reads through the book and turns the page for the reader, a great option for the little guys when they want some independence with the book app.

In all three reading styles the reader is able to interact with the pages by tapping certain words or objects and the book will read what that word or thing is out loud.

There is a parent section with instructions for the book. In order to enter or ‘unlock’ access to this section, it asks you to follow the simple instructions such as “swiping the screen with two fingers to the left”. Copyright information and information on the ebook publisher can also be found on this parent screen.

When in one of the first two options (read to me or read it myself) there is an arrow in the bottom left hand corner. When you select this area there is an option to go home, look at the pages from a glance, record your own narrator voice, or an options menu. In the options menu you can turn off sound effects and turn off the ability to tap on pictures. The voice recording feature is a great way to give your child a familiar voice when they are listening to the story. You read the story while it records your voice, then it stores that reading as an option in place of the automated narrator voice.

Daisy’s Comments:

This is a great book for toddlers and preschoolers. It features fun musical instruments. My favorite feature of this particular book app is that it has creatures hidden throughout the story. There are 18 mice and 19 spiders to locate throughout the story. The book tally’s up the number you find throughout the book giving you the total at the end. A great way to add another dimension to the interactive story feature.

Just A Little Music is available on iPhone, iPod and iPad. It is also available on Google Play and Amazon App Store for Android devices. It is currently on promotion for 50% off. If you prefer reading print book, the 2nd Amazon link is for the print book of the same title.
